Hi all,
I'm having a bi lateral mastectomy with deep flap recon. next month. I was wondering if any of you who have had this surgery lost any weight after this. I have had chemo & radiation and have gained about 15 pounds. I know I can get it off , but I was just wondering if you noticed this yourselves.

Thanks

I lost weight after a single
I lost weight after a single mastectomy with DIEP flap reconstruction and continued until I started chemo. Bummer! I have put it all back on and more. I did loose over 10lbs without even trying in the 2 months after surgery.

I gained a lot of weight,
I gained a lot of weight, too... about 25 pounds. Plus I was on steroids for the joint pain that chemo caused me and my face was super puffy. My face isn't as puffy now, but I haven't lost any weight yet. I had my mastectomy April 1.

    Chemo and weight gain
I tried so hard not to gain weight during chemo (and maybe even lose a lb or two, hmm). Since I was less active and had to eat often to keep from getting nausea, I was just eating a yogurt here and a bit of cereal there, etc. every couple hours. Well, in my second chemo cycle, I got GOOD and SICK with a monster cold. My blood counts were low but I grocery shopped and chatted with friends, which might have contributed. Looking back, however, I think I just wasn't eating enough to stay strong.

Since then, I've eaten more, gained 6 lbs. (darn!) and I feel peppier. The onc warned me that chemo is not the time to try to lose weight. So, be careful. I did find that cutting out all sodas and most fruit juices (I eat whole fruit) is a good place to cut a lot of calories. Just think about what you're eating, maybe keep a food journal. Good health first and foremost! Best wishes to you with your chemo!

    poundage increase - yuck!
they give you steroids with the chemo treatments in an effort to prevent side effects.
Steroid are what make you gain wait. I had lost 45 pounds before I was diagnosed with breast cancer and started chemo. I did gain back about 10. I am working to lose it now. Don't be surprised if you gain 5 lbs overnight after your treatment. By the next week most of it should be gone. Just eat the way your used to and you should be fine. I wish you the best.
