Kathryn and several people in the group wanted to see some updated pictures of Harley, so over the w/end, I put together a couple of pics of his papa, “Jerry Lee” and several of Harley, now at 12-weeks old.

Harley is the latest member of our Pet CareGiver family and he’s trying to find his way to see what he can do – or what he can get away with, LOL :)

We finally went outside while taking Harley out – weather was good that day, so we all went out. What’s the big deal about this? Well, we have not been outside in over 18-months since Sundance passed away as the outside just became dead to us – too many memories over the 13-years from his puppyhood, adulthood, and finally poor health, were everywhere in the yard, - on every blade of grass - every corner of the yard.

I played with Harley and tried to chase him until I got too tired and I went to sit down on the porch and just watch him. His growth and transformation is incredible – he is running and leaping and jumping and learning what his body can do – you can see that the lights are turned on, the wheels are turnin' and that he is dialing in.

Goldens have a natural “burst of energy” that they have to expel many times a day. They are very high energy and their stamina is the stuff of legends, so exercise, and hard exercise is key for them. They suddenly just take off at breakneck speed, running and jumping and cutting on a dime – it’s really something to see. So, I sat there in amazement at this new little life and began to experience things and life again through him – it was a moment of revelation.

I sat there with tears welling up in m eyes, both both of joy and sadness at the same time – a mix of what Sundance was and what Harley IS and what he will become.

I saw the Cycle of Life – the Passing of the Torch – it became clear to me how wonderous that Life can be, when we recognize those simple and precious moments and just live for that second and not worry about anything else FOR THAT MOMENT, until It passes – then it becomes so much more – it becomes a MEMORY, that Cancer or anything cannot take away from any one of us. A simple lesson, but often times one of the hardest to conquer.

What it really did for me was make me FEEL ALIVE for that moment – I thought things are going to change, things will be alright, we have a new life now – and Harley has brought that too us, but he is too young to understand that right now – he’s just too busy being “Marley” …I mean Harley.

The other story I wanted to tell you is a good one too. We were raking leaves and that is normally a chore and something you dread doing – it’s work, you know? But this was Harley’s 1st experience with “leaves” – see where I’m going with this?

I raked up many piles and Harley would charge my rake, do a couple of his maneuvers and then WHAM at full speed he would just plop in the leave piles, burrow his nose in there, throw leaves into the air, and then try to catch them in his mouth. Every time, I raked the pile back, here he’d come again at full speed, within seconds he had smashd into 7 or 8 piles, just having the time of his life….to see his happiness and wonderment at such a thing, made it not a chore, but a wonderful event.

He thought he was so funny messing up Papa’s leaves – and he did it “over and over” again, much to his delight and much to my chagrin – but you know what? I just laughed it off – and again, it has now become a memory that I will treasure for his life and ours.

You see, I now have a “family” again – and it felt so good to be able to share time together and laugh and play – it was so good for our souls – I still feel old in body, but young in heart. Kim took video and I wish CSN had a place to post videos – you guys would love how he attacked the rake, jumped in the piles, and rolled all around in them – you should have seen the look on his face when all the piles were picked up.

Spring is coming and we are looking forward to the warmer weather so we can all go outside now and begin to live some – I never realized how much we were missing since Sundance passed away – just stuffed it all down, but Kim and I died that day, we lost our family and nearly ourselves.

For those of you who have children, this probably sounds crazy, but adding someone else to the mix besides each other, changes the dynamics of the entire situation – our family is now whole again – and that’s a good thing. There’s just something magical that comes from the addition of someone besides yourselves – I suppose it’s the care and support that you now have to provide – someone else to be responsible for – watching someone grow and blossom - it does make all the difference.

I’ve been struggling some watching Harley come into Sundance’s house and yard and begin to take his place. I knew it would not be easy to do – to let my heart go to another Golden– I felt like I was betraying Sundance and his memory – it has been very hard to Let Go! And I’m just being honest about it.

Harley won’t take no for an answer though and I am now bonding with him – he is testing his papa’s limits and my patience at times, but he is worming his way into my heart and I can see that Harley will be his own unique personality with his own way of being – and that differs so much from Sundance. To sit back and watch his growth and physical development, as well as watch how smart he is and what he is capable of is making me a proud papa. Sundance is gone but never forgotten – and now Harley rides in to pick up where he left off – he has already SAVED two souls since his arrival and hence is the newest CareGiver to our family – and TO YOU too, if you "let him in."

He’s always going to be “Marley” though – he’s just got that in him – I’m ok with it, it’s what makes him who he is and who he will be.

Harley and Jerry Lee pics are on my Expressions page – all on the 1st page I believe. Happy viewing! So, stop by a minute and see how “Marley”…I mean Harley is looking :)

Tell me if you can see the family resemblance between Papa and Son - he looks to be the spittin' image of his daddy. They are both so handsome, so majestic, so Golden - it just makes me so proud.

    I'm sure that Sundance
is most happy to see that you are once again enjoying the love of a Golden. They, no matter what breed they may be, are so much a part of our lives that is hard to distance yourself from them. I know, we have a Lab who is a great part of our family, too. They play, they eat and they sleep but most of all they have love for us that nothing can touch.
They are so devoted and will continue to develop quirky habits that you will just grin at and shake your head. They are such forgiving friends, too. Nothing you do would be unforgiveable to Harley. I am so happy to hear that you are loving being Harley's family. I know he is happy, as is Sundance.

I just looked at those wonderful pictures. Such a handsome dude he is. Do you plan to "show" Harley yourself? Our breeder started showing Rocky but it became such a hassle to have him gone most weekends and sometimes far away! We finally said no more. But he has several points toward champion but will never finish. We love him too much to have him gone so much. I'm sure that Golden's are just as much fun/work/aggravation (?) when puppies as Lab's are. Rocky totally removed all the lattice work on our deck, chewed up a brand new seat on the Grasshopper mower, and was forever carrying 2 x 4's around the yard and chewing them up.

    Hi Sandy

Thank you for your response! Our contract states is for "pet only." But the breeders said we could have him evaluated at 6-months. If he were to be shown, we'd have to adjust the contract. If he were eligible, I'd certainly like to see if he liked it and would do something "local" in and around our area. I'm with you, don't know if I would want him traveling all around - Jerry Lee does that and just competed in the Westminster Kennel Club dog show in NY city.

I'll just have to see how he develops - however, he might work for Agility, running those courses in timed trials. He's super fast, cuts on a dime, and looks to be all athlete, he runs all day and never tires, LOL :)

So we might consider these AKA events and see if he likes that - he's fearless, dives behind the couch, like those tunnels, he can walk on bricks and steps, like those beams and such - and he can jump really good.

It's wide open, and I want to explore options and see if he liked something.

Stay tuned - thanks for looking at the pics, glad you liked them.

And your lab, Rocky! OMGoodness, 2x4's in his mouth, what a sight to behold.

Nice hearing from you again BTW - do take care!

    Cute puppy
He sure is a handsome boy. Wonder if he would make a good therapy dog? I saw therapy ponies in a skilled care facility the other day. He has some big paws to fill. Jerry Lee is a very handsome guy too.

    Hi Craig,

Harley is gorgeous; congratulations! I think he has beautiful, soulful eyes + I love his bandana! I am really happy that he is bringing you joy + also getting you out in your backyard - we all need to enjoy our outdoor spaces when we can. Enjoy!

I really enjoyed reading this. Thank you! I am a cat person myself but I have lots of Grand - doggies. Your post made me think of the comfort my 3 elderly cats( ages 9, 11, & 17) gave me after returning home from the hospital. They wouldn't leave my side and I truly believe they helped in my healing process. My husband took pictures of me on the sofa, mouth wide open, zonked on pain pills with my 3 furr-balls gathered all around me watching out for their Momma.

Wishing many more happy times for you and Marley/Harley.

    Great photos
Craig, thanks for sharing the photos and stories about the "kids". They are cute looking dogs. As far as posting videos go, you can open a YouTube account and then post a link from your expressions page. There is also a site I use for transferring files and sometime videos too that can be found here
    http://www.screencast.com/

I don't find it crazy about adding someone new to the mix and the whole dynamic. Now if you'll excuse me, I have to take Grif outside so he can "do his business".

    BabyDoll!!!
That's what he is! Soooo sweet, and loving, and just full of love in his eyes there. I am melting here! I never had a golden retriever before, but would love one. I will say that Sundance is looking down from animal heaven and wagging that tail of his at seeing how happy you and Kim are now with his little brother. Dogs love you so much, they don't know about being pushed aside or anything, they just want to see YOU happy, and you are, and let this puppy grab your heart, sure, they are no replacement for the one ones you lose, but they are there to fill the emptiness that was once there, and to make sure they make you as happy as the other one did. You aren't forgetting about Sundance, you're doing this for him too, he wants to see you both living again, and loving again. Believe me, that's all they want for us, and from us, is LOVE.

I can see you sitting there watching Harley run around, while pictures of Sundance go through your mind, and that's ok, because you don't want to lose those memories, you can now live and make NEW memories with your new baby, and have fun doing that!

I will upload new pics of my new puppy soon, she's teeny-tiny, part maltese, part schnauzer, and looks like a cartoon or something, I don't know, she's precious, and is just so small, she doesn't look real LOL...her name is Romy, and as soon as I have my daughter get it off her camera, I'll upload some new pics!

I'm so glad you got the dog, and already sleeping with it! LOL..Romy slept with me a few times, and then ends up also in my daughters room, but they sure do make us happy don't they?? and when we're happy, it's more positive energy flowing into our bodies, which will help us with our illness too, she makes me feel better already!

Thanks Everyone for your warm replies on the post and in the Expressions page. Brightened my day to hear from you all.

So glad that Harley can brings *smiles* to all of your faces too :)

Tiny asked me if he might be a "therapy" dog? Anything is possible and I have definitely considered that option - right now Harley is "in training" providing some therapy to each one of us here on the board that look into his eyes and his precious face.

Thanks so much for taking a few minutes out of your life and sharing this with me. Somewhere around 6-months, I'll post some more and we'll share another story and a laugh or two, OK?

I am so happy that you have found love and a new meaning in your life with your new puppy. It is wonderful how much joy dogs bring to our lives. He is lucky to have you and you are lucky to have him. We too have a new puppy, 10 months, and other than chewing up a new pair of shoes and the armrests of our patio lounge chair and door frame of our door, he has been great! (you would think the many many bones we have would keep him entertained). I def. see the resemblance. I always wonder how pets look like their owners.

    Craig,
So glad you posted some new pics of Harley. My how he has grown!!! I do think I see a little glint of mischief in those eyes. He will definitely keep you on your toes for some time to come. Enjoy every moment. Like childhood, puppyhood passes so swiftly. I am happy for you and Kim and for the newfound joy and purpose that he has brought into your lives.

    Oh you will, Jan

I'm just waitin' on you to feel better and then it will be a go. I know how hard it is to visit when you are in treatment. The good things are worth waiting for.

Harley says "HI" to everyone and he appreciates all of your attention :)

Thank you for sharing the wonderful moments with Harley.

Pets are a wonder, aren't they? I have 2 cats and before I got sick they could be pretty independent...as cats are sometimes...but now it seems one or both are right by my side...kinda watching over me and trying to make me better.

The female likes to lay in the top paper feed tray on the all in one...lol...I call her my CopyKat....aka Sweetie.

Pets are like kids though...there is always plenty of love in our hearts for a new one...even as we miss the one(s) who have gone to Pet Heaven.

    Thanks again for sharing.

Thank you so much! You can see the "devil" in him too, huh? What? Me? Trouble?

Yes, he has grown so much this past month - we've just had him 4-weeks now. He's really blooming now and into everything. He's changed Kim so much and seeing that has been the real transformation. They are out on a walk right now...I think it's only going to get better.

I'm so glad to see you - and best of luck on your new treatments - I read a little bit about that but did not have time to respond at that time. I'm home now and re-read it and saw it on your other board. So happy for you and I know it's going to be a winner for you.

Do tell when you know something. Thanks for thinking about us - I'll tell Kim that all of you are happy for us.

    Love/Craig
