Hi Ladies,
Quick question, may not be a quick answer. I'll ask this one thing and then hopefully I can put this damn obstruction topic on the back burner for a while and give it a rest.
I've been out since yesterday as you know, and I had a lot of work to do here. One thing is that I have to give myself needles every 8 hours that is suppose to help with the distention, can you beleive they didn't have it in stock so I have to wait til tomorrow. Today I've had the nagging pain all day long and still do. I"m taking my breakthrough meds and I'm still having pain. I hate to know what is really under all the meds I'd probably be in Emergency. Darndest thing, I had a great poop this morning, I was so excited and then after that NOTHING, no farts NOTTA! I haven't ate, cos I'm afraid I will aggravate even more. My question is, should I just give it a rest with the food for now. And although I have read online what I can and can not have to eat with obstructions but I still want advice or if you can share what you have done durning these times. Any secrets other than the ensure which I will try out the strawberry one tomorrow.
I'm not vomitting which to me is a good thing right? Should I be concerned right now? Tomorrow is a new day and so it can chance (for the better). Well Ladies that's where it's at right now, all comments, advice/suggestions are so welcomed. Thank you so much. Now I must go cos I have the nods real bad right now. I love you guys so much!! I'll check in tomorrow to read your responses.
Very assuming of me eh? LOL

Linda

I would be careful with the Ensure. It tends to constipate. If you can keep up clear liquids, that would be great. In addition to that, I would get some probiotics, or eat some yogurt that is high in acidopholis. Most yogurts have it. And get the really pureed ones so that you don't have to deal with digesting the whole fruits inside. Prune juice does work, even a 4 oz. glass a day. If you're going to have fibrous foods you would have to be sure to drink LOTS of water. Otherwise, you could get bound up and have a problem again. The best fibers would be whole grains (oats, wheat germ, rye). So, if you like oatmeal that would be good. I'll try to come up with more suggestions later.

My husband goes through this all the time. He takes Miralax and several other things. He can barely eat solids. And when he does, a cycle starts all over again of constipation, headaches, etc. So, I understand what you're going through.

I'm no doctor, but I hope the suggestions help. The goal is to keep your system going without too much strain on it. Take care, and don't work too much! You need some rest, too!

    I would rest it
    Dearest Linda,

Sorry to hear the problem continues for you, I am surprised they didn't give you specific instructions when they sent you home on how to eat. I know when I have had after I have dealt with one it is liquid diet, then soft diet and very slowly adding food back in. I also maybe would check on the food list dos and don'ts for people with colostomy bags ~ I got very good advice from a women who had a bag way back when on what causes more gas and such. Pray all is getting better already. Hugs ♥ Prayers Bonnie

    bowel obstruction
I've suffered with obstructions on and off since having my illesostomy reveresed in Feb.09. I avoid peanuts although I love them. I also try not to eat the same food to many days in a row. I drink 65oz of water daily and I eat prunes daily. Since I've implimented this I haven't had any bowel pain since Oct. of 08. Prior to this I was suffering at least once per month. As for your problem at hand, I think I would be real cautious about starting on solid foods right away. I would try soft foods as mentioned like Oatmeal, prunes, soups. As also mentioned I would make sure to drink plenty of water with any bulking agents. Good luck!!
