Tx #8 going pretty well, all things considered

I admit I was pretty scared about another round of chemo after the allergic reactions. But everything we did this time seems to have helped. Yesterday at disconnect time, I was the best I've ever been for disconnect. That doesn't mean I felt great, but it means I didn't want to beg anyone to put a bullet to my head, or just put me in a coma till chemo is done. The home health nurse was one that has seen me several times now, and she commented on how much better I did this time too!

Pre-treat with Decadron and Benadryl twice daily for 3 days prior to chemo. Chemo day I got Emend, Aloxi, Decadron, Calcium & magnesium pre-treat. Then the oxaliiplatin was done over 6 hours. (Tx #7 it was done over a much longer desensitization protocol in the hospital that helped me out a lot - I seem to be doing ok with it again.)

We reduced my 5-FU dosage after such a hard time the last time with the allergic reaction and other problems. We lowered the 5-FU from 4584 to 4000 and the Leucovorin from 7640 to 7000, but oxy is still the same at 160.

Then afterwards I got post-treated with Decadron and Benadryl for home days on the pump, twice per day. I took my last Benadryl and Decadron last night. I didn't have any trouble with the Oxy this time, although neuropathy in my feet is really kicking in now. But I have more "normal" neuropathy now - not the really weird toxicities and cramping I was dealing with. The 5-FU allergic reaction was kept under control with the protocol we used. My lips, tongue and throat got sore and a little swollen, but taking the Bendadryl and Decadron kept it under control enough that I have not opened the MethylPrednisolone multi-pack, and no ER trips this time. Hopefully I won't have trouble today, and won't have to open it at all. The Decadron is gone, but I can try Benadryl first. If that doesn't keep things under control, then I am stuck with the mega-steriods. But I am hopeful this time that I won't need them.

My energy is a little better than usual for day #4, and the nausea has been kept better under control. I tried to get by without my 3rd Emend pill (standard protocol is only 2 days of the pills), but I couldn't do it. I took another Emend, and within 30 minutes felt SO much better! I struggle with the nausea all the time - it never completely goes away, but keeping it at a lower level makes the difference of staying hydrated and nourished. If I can get the edge off enough to eat and drink, something, that is what counts.

I've been just dreading having so many more cycles to go, but feel a lot better about it all now. I'm 2/3 done. Just 4 more to go! And I'm going to ask for a reduction in oxy next cycle too. I think if we back that off a little, I can tolerate this and finish!

I am just 1 treatment ahead of you!!! We can do it!!! I go for #10 tomorrow (2/15) - no Holiday for me....Happy B'day Presidents!
I have not had a reduction in Leukovorin or the 5-FU....I have completely stopped the oxi..due to un-resolved neuropathy in both of my feet....I did get 8 rounds of the Oxi...and I am NOT missing the other side effects from it...
Just looking to finish these last 3 rounds and CELEBRATE!!!
I have scheduled a appointment with the Colorectal surgeron on 3/17 - my last round of chemo is on 3/15...can you tell I am ready for the reversal?!?!?!

    Right there with you
Well, #9 comes on Wednesday. I sure will be glad when we all can shout "DONE WITH IT". I have neuropathy in my feet and hands, the fine motor skills are becoming very difficutl. This is kind of bad news because of what I do, I can't hardly hold a needle, drawing and cutting with scissors is very difficult. I think I will have to address this with the doctor next visit. My mouth feels like it is on fire, the list can go on for a very long time.

Like Kathryn I am stuggling with nausea most of the time, but getting through it with meds. One thing that is really difficult is the fatigue. I have about 2 hours a day where I really feel on top of things and then I get tired.

All this seems difficult but with only 4 more treatments I keep telling myself we are almost done so hang in there.

WE WILL MIKE IT, And yes I am fighting like a girl!!!!

    nausea and drugs
HI, I just had tx #5 and I am so grateful for how I've been doing. I had a 20% reduction of the oxy because of side effects that put me in the hospital. After the visit to the hospital I went to a homopathic dr. She put me on Ther-botic complete powder. I take it every day. I also eat kefer with dan active yogart as well. This is to help balance out the good bacteria with the bad bacteria in the colon. I also now drink my tea with ginger honey tonic. This really helps with nausea. As does peppermints by chowards. Finally since the drugs put my colon to sleep for about 5 days and it makes me very uncomfortable and then rips me up in side, I have now tried Medical Marajauna. I used a vaporizor and lemon bars. I was able to not take any pills except emend through the week and my colon woke up afteronly two days. On the third day I did go back to compazine since my colon was awake. I couldn't believe how well the MM worked for nausea. The day between treatment I was able to walk a few miles, go to the movies and feel perfectly normal. Day three and four were tougher but still manageable with the MM. My adult kids thinks it's funny that at 53 I am now trying our pot!!! Life sure takes different paths. God bless and keep up the good fight. Jill
