Hi guys... I have a question about when they take down my iliostomy. How long did you have to stay in the hospital? I cant stand hospitals so I'm kind of looking at some kind of time frame on how long I'll be in. Also what was the pain like 1 - 10.

Life is funny sometimes

    Time
    Hi Brooks
I think I was in the hospital for 4 days. You have to go NPO a while to let heal so as not to develop leaks. Was on morphine pump in hosp., could walk about the second day. Went home with pain pills, did not need the full dose prescribed. Right after surgery pain like 9, then decreased rapidly, going home probably about a 4-5. Healed up pretty quick, though the scar area stayed sore, and still have to do scar massage to keep it lose so no tearing.
Was so glad to have the reversal though. Good luck with yours.

I was in 7 days- gotta go
I was in 7 days- gotta go poop before they let me go home. So in that regard, same as the resection surgery. I think Mayo tends to keep people longer? Wondering if that is due to just taking extra precautions due to most people traveling home and living too far for emergency checks? I did not think the pain was bad at all. I was up walking that night, off the pump in 24 hours- the best thing for the pain was tordahl.

The worse thing for me was the diet- no solids until bowels moved. I remember begging the surgeon for an egg, not much, just AN EGG for crying out loud!! She didn't even bat an eye- and told me no. Then a fellow of hers was in and I told him, "say the surgeon was just in and she said I could try an egg, so be a dear and call down to the kitchen and get me an egg and a tuna salad sandwich". He just laughed, patted my knee and said, "lying is not going to work here at Mayo, but good try!"

My biggest issue was a hernia developed after the surgery. I since have learned this is very common. I wish they would have dealt with this THEN, would have saved me additional surgery last July to repair it!

    OK Brooks...you ask for it.....
If ya wanna go home in a hurry after the take down there's nothing like 5 cups of hospital jello to get the old poop hole going again (did that it works). As for pain, that depends on whether you let me do it or the Drs...If you wanna go home in a hurry, come to West Ky. and I'll do it for ya and save ya a ton of money too ! Although I don't think a stick in the mouth to bite on will serve as well as morphine but ya do with what ya have around at the time ...and the best thing about the whole deal " you can go home the same day" !!! I sure don't wanna hear ya whining and hollering about some little ole stitches I put in there and keep my kids awake all night to boot. I got enough troubles of my own here.

So....if ya want the expedited surgery, come on down to W. Ky and we'll leave the light on for ya !!!

Or, you can go to some ole snotty nose, rich as a foot up a bulls butt, hooty tooty hi fallootin' Dr somewhere in Beverly Hills or Malibu Beach and do it the easy way....

Be a real man an come on down to Dr Buzzard, we're like Dairy Queen here....."we'll treat ya right"..........

:)...and I did all this without the aid of medication..........Buzzard MD

    Takedown
I had my takedown in September. I was in the hospital 2 days and as soon as i tooted, my surgeon let me leave. As for the pooping, his exact words were "you are not a stupid woman and i have no problem sending you home before you pass stool"
I was only out of work for a week, i do have a desk job so that made it easy. On a pain scale of 1-10, the resection being a 10, the takedown was a 2. It was sore adn the wound had to stay open so I had to cover it each day with fresh bandages for about a month.
I was lucky, the takedown went great and I am thrilled!!
I was so happy not to have the bag that I was willing to suffer through anything.

Kathy...you said that you never liked your bag.....I love mine..
I like it so well it doubles for a change purse now. Its kinda rough on my folding money but the change (especially the pennies) come out shining brilliantly. I also wake up in the morning with the same amount I went to bed with. I wouldn't trade mine in for nothing.....Love and Hope and ( need change for a quarter?).......:) Buzz

    Iliostomy takedown
Hi, I had a my takedown done in 2005. I was in the hospital for 7 days. I never have good surgeries no matter how major or minor. I suffered with severe pain in my chest which they said was gas from the operation. I could hardly breath. Felt like a heart attach. My doc ordered toradol and they forgot to give it to me so it really was quite painful. They sent me home after I pooped which was not controllable. I had a very hard time when I got home. Not so much with pain just with constant pooping. After a few months I got better though. Thank God, I will be NED for 6 years next month. It has been a very long, hard, hard road for me. I have resections and blockages and it is hard as I said. Good luck to you. You may not have such a hard time. I hope you just breeze through this. This is just my experience. Best regards

    takedown
I was in thye hospital for about 28 hrs. Up right away. mim to mod pain, percocet did well. It is kind of compared to an appendectomy surgery. I was uncomfortable for about a 1wk and 1/2, but then felt pretty good, not back to normal till about 6 wks. But my surgeon left the ileostomy site open to heal from the inside out to prevent infection. Hope your takedown goes smoothly. Petrina
