hi, does any one know about a procedure that inserts some kind of camerea or something in the lungs to try to see if the lung nodules are cancerous. My sister is scheduled to have this procedure in a few weeks and I was wondering if any one knows anything about it.

    VATS
    Hi Amy

This sounds like a VATS surgery - Video Assisted Thoracic Surgery.

Surgeons generall go in on the side of the ribcage and can explore to where the tumor is located and look it over and take some or all of it out and do a biopsy to determine if it cancererous or benign.

I just completed a lung surgery myself a couple of months ago - we originally started out with VATS in mind, but my plan changed and they ended up using the DaVinci Robot Surgical System on me - a ground breaking new surgical machine and technique - I was the first person in North Texas to have the procedure performed - it was a success.

The first 7-8 weeks were tough, but it is starting to get better. I went back to work and am recovering every day - still not perfect but I was back to work in half the time - the DaVinci's big thing is a shorter recovery time and it's done that.

DaVinci is robot assisted - surgeon sits at a console while the DaVinci robot sits over the patient and the arms move as he moves on the console.

VATS is traditional where the surgeon is standing directly over the patient as in most surgeries.

Here is a link to the hospital web article if you would like to read about that.

I hope that the doctors find nothing serious with your sister and I'm sending best wishes and positive thoughts your way!

    Extra! Extra!
    Hi Amy

Hot off the presses! My hometown just published an article in the newspaper about the DaVinci surgery - the first article was from the hospital - this one is from the newspaper.

The local news is releasing a story on Jan 6th and I'll be sending a link for all the Semis; to be able to see that too.

I hope these stories give you and your sister STRENGTH to get this done and have no worries!
