To have corrective Surgery?

Hello Semi-Colons,

I have not posted for a while but wanted to throw this question out and would value your opinion. I a currently NED, diagnosed in 2007 stage 3. The doctor used a laparascope for the surgero so was not too invasive bit still ended up with a surgical hernia.

I am scheduled to go in for surgery in late January and I am having second thoughts. There is a 10 to 20% change the surgery might not be successful. The hernia does not bother me greatly so I am wondering if I should forgo this. Surgery is surgery after all and I am not thrilled with the idea of recovery time plus a chance it may not work. Has anyone else had this surgery and if so how did it go.

Not an earth shattering topic I know, but wanted some feedback from you.

    I'm just recovering from lung surgery and as you say Surgery is Surgery, no picnic - but I was trying to remove 2 tumors.

    Your case, I just don't know - it depends on how you feel about it, the expense of a surgery, and time missed from work if you are employed...it's a tough call.

    If I did the surgery, I'd let the stats go and figure you were going to be on the good end of it. If there is a chance to correct something, I always get after it, but that's me.

    I'm starting to breathe again, lung surgery takes your breath away - really. But if I had to go 'round again, I'd giddy up and go for it.

    I think this one is a matter of personal choice - whatever you do will be right for you, right now at this time.

    Thanks for your input Craig. Hope you are breathing better. The thing about surgery is that OK, I have the surgery and then 3 months down the road something unexpected pops up and I need more surgery. Will have to think about. I have a little time to consider this.

    Hi Lance!
    If you don't have the surgery, what would happen though? I would be so afraid of the hernia rupturing, causing other complications as well, the 10-20% chance of it not working is small, but just consider also the pain that may come with it getting worse, instead of waiting, I'm just not sure what happens if you don't get this done, and just worry it could become something worse.

    It does not bother me that much but I do share the concern of it getting worse although the surgeon said it might not necessarily get worse. I am also thinking of the snow shoveling coming up and I won't be able to lift anything for a while. More to think about. Maybe I will wait till spring. Thanks for the input.

    Lance,
    Just wanted to through my 2 cents in. Might want to be careful with the lifting and snow moving before you have surgery. You don't want a strangulated hernia-that just means the decision is out of your hands and you will have surgery now.

    Your decision can wait awhile, just be careful. Oh by the way my husband's cousin had a surgical hernia repaired and it was a bit painful and he had to take time for it to heal correctly so surgery would work.
