Thrush again...

Yesterday (day #8) I was finally starting to feel better. But I got worse again with tummy issues, diarrhea, and just overall feeling yucky. Sure enough I woke up this morning with thrush again. My throat is getting sorer by the minute. Fuzzy tongue and bumps all over in my mouth. Awful taste in my mouth, no appetite.

I called the oncologist office this morning. No call back yet. I called them back at 1:30 and was told if I don't hear back from them by 4PM to call again. I guess I'm a little upset about this. All I need is for someone to call in the anti-fungal prescription. If they'd done it this morning, my daughter could have picked it up and I'd be feeling better sooner. Instead it has gotten worse all day, and if they don't call it in soon my husband will have to go back out to get it after he gets home from work. He drives from account to account all day for work, and the LAST thing he wants to do when he gets home is drive again (and we live in the boonies).

Does anyone else have trouble getting slow call-backs from their oncologist's office? This is the third time I've had this issue when it is something kind of important. I don't call if it isn't important. I don't want to bother busy people. Instead I email my colon cancer nurse navigator. She is wonderful and finds answers to my questions and is an advocate for my care. She emailed me about something else today, and I mentioned the thrush. She emailed back to ask if I'd called the office about it because I should get it taken care of. I assured her I'd called.

Have them give you a RX for

Have them give you a RX for Mary's Magic Mouthwash. It worked for me when I had thrush early on.

    I wonder
I wonder if that would help if I used it right away. I thought I might be getting thrush again, looking at my tongue two days ago, but I wasn't sure. Last night the mouth and GI issues kind of hit together again.

I'm not too the extremely severe situation I was in last cycle yet, but it is advancing very quickly today. I don't just get it in my mouth. It is in my GI tract. Once again I have a swollen sore throat and feel just plain crappy, including stomach pain and diarrhea. I was starting to feel better after the last round, and then all of this started up together with the thrush again. Two weeks ago I was in awful shape due to the thrush throughout my entire GI tract.

    Thrush
    Kathryn,
Well, I am at it again also. I had my 2nd treatment last Wednesday and Sunday my mouth and throat started to fill funny. I could only taste salty stuff and then the white "creep" started. Called my Dr. today and she has called out an RX of meds, because of chemo brain I do not remember what I am getting. I will let you know what they are after I pick them up.

I am also going to ask the Onc about magic mouth wash to prevent this 'cause it is icky!
    Take care,
    Jan

    Fluconazole
    Hi Jan,

It is probably fluconazole - brand name Diflucan. I'm glad you caught this early and are getting the meds. How has round #2 gone for you so far?

    Round 2
    Kathryn,
Round 2 was different from the first one. The day of treatment I got sick, but the next two days were better. I had home health come out on Saturday and do hydration with nausea meds, then I felt worse!(?)Since then it is all I can do to stay upright, I am very tired. I had labs drawn on Tuesday but don't see the Dr until Friday.

The neuropathy has been worse, but is starting to subside. Something tells me time will go by and I'll get this done, but this is not for the faint of heart!

Take care, let me know how you are doing.

P.S. Sorry it took so long answer.

I hope you are starting to do better now that you are a week out. I can relate to the tired. Even though the first round was tougher on me (or seemed to be) than the second, I'm not rebounding much this time in the energy department. I'm hoping my counts are good enough to stay on schedule tomorrow. I get labs drawn first thing and see the onc after that, and then off to the infusion room. It could be a very long day, as I'm asking to have the oxy time extended to 6 hours instead of 2, as per the studies that show that to be effective in cases of problems like mine.

Rest all you can when you need to, and try hard to stay hydrated. That is our big job for now - ahead of everything else.

(I think your "starting to feel worse" on Saturday was because you were getting thrush. So hopefully that won't happen next time.)
