Does anyone have any helpful tips on the keeping the noise down with a stoma. I have a dental appointment next month and I feel helpless because I will be in the chair and no place to go if it feels like talking(noise). I can deal with this at home, My little son just laughs when it happens but at the dentist I dread the visit. Should I just not eat before the visit? take Beano? will that help? Let me know if anything works for anybody. Thanks!

    OMG....
    I was just talking about this in a previous thread, how my stoma went off for the first time in public while I was buying new cell phones at a verizon store, and I was so mortified LOL..my daughter was just giggling away, but I could feel myself turning red!!!

    The only thing I could think of was to put my arm over my bag and press down on it, to shut it up, then walked outside for abit, to see if it would calm down, I had read somewhere awhile back that this is what Clift (Buzzard) did at a church gathering once, it did stop it though, and I was able to resume shopping lol...but it is involuntary, where you never know when it's going to come on, it's embarrassing, but you have to learn to laugh at it, I find it funny now, and just try to laugh it off LOL

    You should
    not be ashamed or embarssed about passing gas. As my husband used to tell me, it is nice to hear and know it is working properly :)

    I'm telling ya you don’t stand a chance. My seems to go off at the worse time. Dinner dates, meetings, and etc. Just tell them that you have cancer and have what is called a stoma. Sometime the truth is the best. A few weeks ago when I picked up my 4 year old from preschool ALL the kids where playing outside. My 4 year old (Hunter) run across the play yard yelling daddy, daddy, then when he gets to me he lifts my shirt up and show's everyone daddy’s "Poop bag". OMG here I am with 20 to 30 three and four year olds looking oddly at me and my "poop bag" So I just sat down and told them that I have what is called cancer and sometimes when you have cancer the doctor gives a lucky few a "Poop bag" I'm telling ya, what started as something like a bad dream turned into all the kids wanting one… Be Proud… You’re a cancer Warrior!!

    Best thing you can do is
    Best thing you can do is when you are in the Dentist Chair to just lay your arm over the bag. it will muffle the flutter.

    If yoiu are really concerned tell your dentist that you have an ostomy and he will understand and it will alleviate your fear of passing gas.

    If you do not already visit the site. Let me suggest you log onto www.uoaa.org You will get more advice there than you can possibly use.

    Do not know if you can predict or control when your body is going to release gas (or at least I can't)and maybe covering bag may muffle the sound but I don;t think we should be embarrassed about this, as it does prove you're still breathing.....Steve

    Thanks everybody for the helpful advice. I guess I really shouldn't be embarrassed. It is what it is, and I am here. Thanks

    OK...The closest thing to a muffler I can come up with.....
    I have sincerely tried to come up with something to alleviate the "noise" that comes at the most inopportune time. I will tell you what I have surmised in my most intellectual tone of speech. I have come to surmise that in the midst of personnel that one must try to maintain a modest but quiet approach to intermingling (especially with dentists) so that the embarrassment factor is rectified. In order to obtain silence one must firstly after the bag is changed and void of poo to hold their hand seemingly cupping it over the stoma until there is sufficient stool to completely encircle the middle of the plastic ring around the stoma. Only then can a wearer allow the freedom of his/her hand to not cup the bag where there will only be heard a slight "phhtt" sound which unless one admits to gaseous emittance no one will hear it.

    In redneck terms, if the bag is empty keep your hand cupped on it and if its got chit in it and its covering the stoma then the fart won't sound off....unless you do as my wife suggested I do and insert a kuzoo in it...Then no one cares.....I have had chili three nights in a row and had jambalaya last night so heres to ya friend, The first 3 verses of she'll be comin round the mountain, kuzoo style.... I say let her rip and if he asks about your gaseous attitude show him your bag...and then tell him he could have been a proctologist and have to mess with buttholes all day long......Have a great day sweetie, we are alive and well and we got horns that we toot to show survivor spirit...don't be skeered...toot and be happy ya can.....its all in the mindset....we all love ya, and have a great dental appointment..........Buzzard

    Oh my goodness what a kid. You have a great communication going on with your son because that is too funny. I'm glad kids are kids because they sure do appreciate the finer things in life :)

    It can be hard to conceal but I always keep my arm over it especially while I am in church. I was always afraid that "Bella" would want to sing when I wasn't or there wasn't any going on. People say to keep a pillow with you and put over it, but I found that too restrictive and found that if she wanted to sing, there was nothing I could do about it. I just tried to make another sound around me. I know it's hard and frustrating. I hated that part about the stoma.
