Ask about side effects and the best way to handle them. Bring someone with you so they can take notes. Listen to your doc and ask the nurses about side effects also. They can give you information from the patient's side of things.
Drink lots of water and eat multiple small meals per day versus three regular meals. Have Biotene toothpaste and mouthwash on hand. Good luck.

Ppurdin, it looks like I'm
Ppurdin, it looks like I'm on a similar track with you. I also had surgery on July 21, and will see the oncologist on Aug 13th, to discuss my treatment. As soon as I knew I'd be getting chemo, I scheduled an appointment with my dentist, for complete exam, cleaning and x-rays on my 7 natural teeth. That was today. The technician recommended a deep cleaning, and she managed to have time right then. Not pleasant, and my mouth is sore now from the needles, the scraping and all. But this was important to my peace of mind. There should be no surprises during my treatment.
I'm also trying to get as much information as I can about possible side affects, what supplements I can & should take, as well as ones to avoid. Stocking up on "comfort foods", and also coaching HubbyDearest in the fine art of taking care of his most treasured possesion.
I haven't much advice for you, as this is uncharted territory for me as well. But I have found this site to be a great source of information, support and comfort. Hope to see you again. Gracie0 -
Glad you are feeling better
since your surgery. I just started chemo on tuesday and am starting to feel crapy. They did send me home with nausea meds, but one isnt covered by my insurance so im waiting for a prior authorization. Do you know what treatments you will be getting yet? I would definately ask about side affects on everyone and ask how long you have to do them. I know you wait and wait for all this to get rollling and once it does, it scares the heck out of you, but we have to do and we have to stay strong. Write down your questions before you go, that way you wont forget them when you get there. Good luck to you on monday. Ill be having a port put in that day since they had trouble with my veins on Tuesday. Im glad they've decided to go with it though. My poor arm has had it because they could only use the right one because my cancer and lymph nodes were on the left side. Take care and try to keep your head up.

There are so many things we could try telling you about chemo, but since everyone is different, and there are a number of different chemo types that might be prescribed, it is hard to say much. Just know that we will be here for you, and let us know when you get your chemo cocktail!

Glad you are feeling better ppurdin from your surgery. Just try to think or research some questions to ask. Did your oncologist give you any literature yet? And, write everything down he says, take someone with you. This site even has questions that you could take with you.

Take someone with you to hear what your oncologist says. Take a tape recorder also if you want to tape the conversation. There is a list of questions to ask on this site and the Susan B. Komen site also. And, ask for any booklets or information that they can send home with you to read.

what worked for me
Take someone with you to your initial appointment-your mind will be spinning. Take someone to each chemo treatment. I always get benadryl which makes me sleepy so I can't drive home. I think it is Very important to practice good dental care. I have always flossed and I also brush 3 times a day. I had no mouth problems. Eat what you want when you want and if it tastes good-keep it on hand. Take a nap daily if you can. My counts have been extremely high and I believe my naps have made all the difference. Hopefully you will get info on the chemo drugs you will be getting explaining the different drugs and their side effects.I know I also had a question and answer time with a chemo nurse and my onc about the chemo and what to expect.0 -

I dont remember, are you getting chemo or radiation or both?d
Either way, my best advice to you is to listen to your body when it tells you you need to rest or take a nap. My head tells me I can still work 50 hours per week, jog 4 times per wk and take care of my family but I am here to tell you that chemo can kick your butt. You need to be sure not to do too much or push yourself too hard. The goal is to get thru the treatment as easily as possible which means you need to rest during the treatment.
Let us know what the plan is and remember we are all here for each other

I am glad your surgery went ok. Mainly just have someone with you. 4 ears are better than two, and, it is so easy for you to miss something that the doctor says.

I sent you a PM, hope you got it already. Thanks for asking about me, that is really sweet. I am right where you are at so I haven't been to the Onco yet, I'll see her 8-13. but it sounds like the ladies gere have already given you some good advice. I always copy and paste whatever questions I think I might need to ask on to a note pad document that I keep on my desl top.That way when I see somrthing on here that I think might be important for me to ask, I won't forget it later.
