Am a born, raised, still am, always will be Northsider. Born in Old Town (North & Wells). Raised in Northcenter (Irving Park Road/4000 N. & Western Ave./2400 W.) - St Benedict Parish. Grade school, high school - even got married at St. Ben's. Our high school principal performed the wedding.

Worked in the Loop 20+ years. A few years at the Harris Bank (remember Hubert, the Harris Lion?). Then, a career in advertising.

Yes, Giordano's is still around. However, we prefer Lou Malnati's for thick crust/deep dish pizza. For regular/thin crust pizza - heck, just depends on where you live. As you know, in Chicago - you're never more than a couple of blocks away from from a fabulous neighborhood pizza joint! For us now, Dino's on Higgins or Phil's on Milwaukee.

Christmas Girl is also Chicago Girl!

xoxoxo backatcha, fellow (though former) Chicagoan!

    Kind regards, Susan

Once a Chicagoan, always a Chicagoan
Susan, In college my nickname was "Chicago" and people who didn't know me guessed I was from the Bronx. That's the southside accent, for you. Dang, people tell me I don't have much of an accent at all anymore.

I do remember Hubert, though that synapse hadn't been sparked in a long time. One thing I love about Chicago is the endless variety of its distinct neighborhoods. I spent my young adulthood scouring the city for the best taco, Italian Sausage, hot dog, pizza, noodles, dim sum, calamari, etc. Those were the days....On the other hand, people think that Idaho and Montana are cold; you don't know cold until you've spent a winter in Antarctica or commuting to the Loop.

I went to college north of the northside, so I have a feel for the northside, too. Westside...I don't know. Fact: There are 3 unrelated people living just outside of my little town of 900 here in Idaho who grew up on the northwest side.

    I know, Lynn...
You've got Lake Michigan water running through your body. Always will, no matter where you live. :-)

The South Side "accent" - made nationally famous by "DA Bears" skit on Saturday Night Live years back, eh? Yeah, I "get" it! Aaahhh, the food. Hard to beat. You know it! - we're a food town. Awesome restaurants. Whatever you want, you can find here.

Very interesting factoid about 4 (including you) Chicagoans right where you are. Hmmm... Do you have a personal theory, as explanation, to connect the dots? Something to ponder... I'm now wondering - IF ever I decide to leave my beloved home town, will I be drawn to Idaho? Prior to this, I felt perhaps only Paris could pull me away... Am re-thinking...

    Kind regards, Susan

    Old Town, wonderful
Old Town, wonderful memories. Hippy town back in the day. I am not from Chicago, born in Chicago but raised outside the area. Hung out in old town as a teen. Live about 45 min out side the area. Susan is the true Chicago girl.

    Old Town was a magnet
Even though it was a distance away, Old Town drew me like a magnet in my late teens and early 20's.

Paris - Idaho, Idaho -Paris ...Diametric opposites
Yes I have a theory...the other 3 migrated in the early 70's when they were in their 20's. Sort of a "return to paradise" reflex because of the Martin Luther King riots, Bobby Kennedy, Democratic convention, Viet Nam, Cambodia and all of the other awfulness. Very traumatic. When I was 18 all I wanted to do was split Roseland and never look back. I landed in Nebraska on an Indian Reservation following college. I wanted the world!

Side note: One of Barak Obama's books describes his community organization work in my old neighborhood!
