Phil - I see how right you were about the farrah fawcett thing. Michael Jackson is posted all over the net and the media and I haven`t seen a darn thing about Farrah Fawcett. It`s a dadgum shame. They are more worried about a guy who at best was odd and had inappropriate boundries with children. Not to take away from his talent but Farrah Fawcett put it all out in the open to bring more awareness to cancer and now because Michael Jackson died on the same day she is old news. I guess they were only interested in documenting her suffering. Michael Jackson died suddenly and now her fight of three years apparently counts for little. Out of sight - out of mind. Noone wants think about those things if it is not happening to them. Of course, all the jokes circulating around are about MJ.

    You are Right
I saw something on TMZ tonight and they did a very little piece on Farrah compared to interviews with several people regarding Michael. It's so sad that she faded so fast from the media. I was hoping that more would come out about colorectal cancer, but I have not seen one thing on that even when they do mention her.

I thought the same thing. It is sad, but I suppose that Michael Jackson was weirder and somehow more interesting. I just think it is a shame because Farrah endured a lot of suffering and MJ just sort of dropped dead apparently.
Oh well, unfortunately we cannot control when or how people die.. I mean when Richard Wright (from Pink Floyd) died of cancer (media never said what kind) the media didn't like latch onto that either, but I suppose it is because he was not out there making an **** of himself.

    I agree with you...
Farrah has been completely overshadowed by the passing of Michael Jackson. The media, even serious channels like CNN have completely forgotten about anything else but Jackson, but they maintain that it's us that can't stop talking about him. However, I doubt very much whether this would have brought Anal cancer to the forefront. Regardless of who it was that died from it, the fact still remains that CRC in any form has a huge stigma attached to it. People are more comfortable laughing and poking fun at people with this disease. The day that Farrah passed away, a woman who happened to be fully aware of my husbands' type of cancer (Rectal) came into the office, and in front of me and 2 others exclaimed "that Farrah died of cancer of the butt, and she would hate for anyone to know that she died of that"!! I was so startled and yes, ashamed that I didn't know what to say. It was the most insensitive thing I'd ever heard, and I felt so bad, I had to leave the office and go pray for strength. I haven't told my husband or family about what she said, but it's really the attitude that most people have, and unfortunately, Farrah's passing was not going to make a huge difference to people who haven't been touched by this disease. Point blank. It it much easier to focus on the tortured soul of Michael Jackson. That's easy, isn't it. He was weird, wacky, and we don't know anyone like him, can't really relate to what he went through, what he became, so it's easier to focus on that madness. Sad but true.

What I would have likely said
to those who spoke of her cancer that way would have been "you two better watch out, you may be next since it targets A$$HOLES" but of course you can't say that at work...

    It Still isn't over
This will drag on for weeks. Now they say he wasn't the father which would not surprise me at all. It's his dermatologist. Also, Joe (the so called father of Michael) isn't listed in his will. From what I've heard about him, he was a real prick, not unlike the beach Boys Dad, and is probably one of the main reasons Michael turned out how he did. I feel it's a tragedy all around but once again, cancer takes a back seat. American love gossip it seems. The dirtier the better, the bigger the star, the more we want to tear them down or sometimes make them larger than life. What I heard today that really cracked me up was Al Sharpton talking about how MJ transcended race. He certainly did. He went from black to white. I find it so hard to believe that he had that skin condition he said he had. I also heard him say he never had plastic surgery or that he only had it once. But with all of this, I blame the media. They shove what they think we want down our throats and I guess many out there love WWF Rasseling or whatever it is. I don't get it but I'm a New Yorker.

    Farrah
Our local TV station just reported her death as "from cancer." I actually called them and asked why they didn't say what kind of cancer, as SHE wanted to get the word out. The (young) producer I talked to said "No one wants to hear Anal or Rectal cancer" to which I replied, "Those of us who have these types of cancer want it discussed, as does Farrah and her family. And there are many of us." I cited Phil's statistics on colorectal cancer deaths. The next broadcast the anchor did say anal cancer, but then blew it by saying "how weird is that?"

I can't believe they said that. Some people are so clueless. You did a great service by calling the first time. What station is it if you don't mind?

    2nd Leading Cancer
    Hi, Vicki

Good for you for calling the station - sounds like some uninformed people up there. Of course this topic makes everybody uncomfortable - since we all acquired it, we have all had to go through so much, we don't mind discussing it.

What's really unfortunate is that cancers of the rectum, colon, and anus put this type of Cancer as the #2 Cancer resulting in death.

And it's an equal opportunity Cancer too, striking both men and women.

Carolyn: I'm so sorry you to had to hear that at your work. That hurt me just reading it. I've found most people to be very insensitive to our cancer situation. I wish you could have said something too her. Maybe without name calling, if you hear something like that again, tell her it's the #2 leading cause of death and could affect her one day - said in the right way you would not get into trouble.

Perhaps, you could even report that to HR at your place. The more I type the more I think about that comment and the madder I get. But, we're bigger people than they are - and they know not what we do.

    Weighing In
You know, i'm sitting here reading all of this - and I'm getting angrier and angrier; because not that long ago i had a similar "stupid person" comment. As my husband is the one with Rectal Cancer, he told me that I am taking vacation this year in the summer. I usually take my the week between christmas and new years and always spread other days off throughout the year. Well this year I decided the hell with that, I want to spend as much time as I can with my husband. So, I hand in my time off request sheet, and my boss (who is fully aware of my husband's condition and treatments) says to me, you sure are taking alot of time off this year, to which i replied, well you know, I don't know how many vacations my husband has left and I want to spend everyone of them with him. To which she replied, well everytime you are on vacation, you are not in the office. I said isn't that the point????? She has also made other various comments about my husband being sick, and that I take too much time off to take him to appointments. Now I don't take him to his chemo, I only go the the major appointments where they have done pet scans and such - I don't want him to be alone if it's bad news. So, because of her attitude I am seeking new employment, hopefully I will get a boss with a little more compassion and understanding.

Sorry to ramble on, it just really makes me mad - people who don't THINK before they TALK.

She is dancing near illegal comments. If you have worked there more than 1 year, you are covered by the Family Medical Leave Act. AND she is discriminating based on medical, also illegal. It may do you good to have a little chat with your HR department and fill them in.

    Here's the kicker Craig
The person that made that comment was the HR Manager! I was so completely dumfounded that I couldn't have said anything if my life depended on it. The other people standing there didn't say anything, didn't laugh, just stood there in shock like I was, and then we all just walked away. She has always been completely inappropriate, but has a very secure position with the CEO of the company, so nothing can be done. Carolyn

I would love to go to the HR department, but we are a small company and I am the HR Department and every other department in the office. My only choice is to get out of here, they are racist about other things as well, but they don't think they are. Not my kind of people.

    Thanks for the suggestion though

I'm speechless! Your post resounded in me, because it makes me wonder what people at my work and where my wife work are saying about me. Right before I was re-diagnosed with Cancer, when it had spread to my liver, I was a few minutes late coming back to work...and my female boss asked me why...and I was told her I was sick (rectum resection and there can be issues...she told me point blank, "YOU DON'T LOOK SICK." I proceeded to tell her that with the chemo, radiation and resection that even if I never had Cancer again, there would be occasional issues, because the bowel has changed.

A couple of weeks after that, the Liver cancer was confirmed. You should have seen the look on her face when I told her I was indeed "sick" and going back out for surgery and whatnot.

So, your comment hit home. I think you are a good person who took someone's nastiness and you handled it with grace & dignity.

And I know this...all bills become "payable" when the Roll Is Called Up Yonder. The Lord will get it all straightened out.

I'm so sorry you had to hear that from a person in charge. I know that was difficult...if I had heard that, I'm sure I would have been angry and hurt as well.

Have a great holiday w/end and it was great talking with you.

    I was very lucky
I was temp for the company that I work for at the time I was DX. My insurance didn't cover Sloan Kettering. I would go for consults there and pay for them myself, then a Onc in my network didn't have a huge ego and let SK call the shots and he did as requested. 5 days before my surgery at Sloan, which I had no idea how I would pay for it, my manager called me in to tell me I was now on staff and covered for the operation, etc. Since I wasn't on staff long enough to have STD (short term disability, not a venereal disease) I was paid full salary for the whole time I was out (6-8 weeks). Needless to say, they are a great company and did the right thing.

    To All of You
Hi Everyone, I am a lurker from the breast and ovarian boards. I came here looking for any info or comments about Farrah. I agree with all of you about her being just passed over as old news because of Michael. While I hope that poor man now has some peace, I wish with all my heart someone would put Farrah and her cause back in the news. Maybe Ryan O'Neal or her friends will turn up and start a foundation or something. I truly think she would have wanted to focus some better attention on this type of cancer. My Grandmother had colon cancer. My Mom had ovarian which spread with the end result being a colostomy. I truly hope that someone focus some attention on this, now that Farrah is gone. I am really hoping Ryan does something to honor her this way. Hugs to all of you, Cindy
