Wanting to re-enter Job force

I was diagnosed back in May of'08. At the time I was attending ECPI full time and I was planning on going back to work during that summer. After being diagnosed and having all the doctor's appointments I found it impossible to concentrate on school so I quit (with plans on finishing at a later date). With all the tests and so forth I was not able to work during that time. Now it's June of '09 and I have had my mastectomy,tram flap,and breast reduction and lift. I am now ready to get back to work. I am having a hard time finding anyone who will hire me. I don't know if it's because of the amount of time I have had off or if my resume is just plain terrible. I am 41 years old with over 20 years experience in retail. I was going to ECPI for Business Adminstration. I am knowledgeable in Excell;Access;Word,and Quickbooks. I especially liked quickbooks because it involved balancing the books. Well, the point of my letter is" PLEASE help me! If anyone out there knows of a (free)resource I can use to help me get back to work,I would greatly appriciate it!

    Have you tried the unemployment office? Some states have classes/training to help reenter the work force. A state we used to live in had some kind of help for women who have not worked for awhile. It's tough with the economy like it is now. I hope you find something. If not have you considered working for yourself? You could contact the Small Business office and get info. Lots of companies need someone to do Quickbooks for them. You have to do it properly or your reports aren't right. A lot of small businesses contract work out.

    It might not be you. The economy is bad and they say there are sooo many resumes put out there now for one position these days. My mom was hiring last month for one position and had hundreds of resumes to look through, normally would not have nearly that many.

    I'd say it's simply the current state of the economy. Don't take it too personal. So many folks have been laid off, through no fault of their own, that a long absence between jobs is certainly not the "black mark" it once was. And, with your steady experience and abilities/skills - it's probably not your resume, either. There are just many more folks looking than there are open positions to be filled. Even many of those currently employed have been hit with pay cuts, benefits reductions, etc. ...

    Keep trying. Lots of good ideas already posted here. Good luck.

    After 8 years of full time with a BIG company, I took a 6 mo LOA to recover from chemo.
    When my Onc. said I could go back to work, all they could offer me was part time.
    It is the louzy economy.
