    Hey there

Yeah, I had this a couple of months ago. Yes it hurts like a mofo for a few secs ..but that's all...Just grit your teeth and do it.The doc who gave it to me presurgery said I could get a local anisthetic if I really couldn't stand it but it would delay everything....so you do have that option...but really , I had juviderm put in my lips last year and that was worse !
I am a big baby when it comes to pain and this is doable....

    The actual needle
The actual needle localization is placed directly into the tumor, and for me, they did do a local anesthesia shot before the procedure. My tumor was located in the left breast, almost under the armpit, and really wasn't that bad. Not to say it didn't hurt at all, but certainly not unbearable. They will need to do this so that the surgeon has a roadmap to where the tumor is located so they don't have to take any more tissue than necessary. The radiologist is who did my placement, and used ultrasound to place it exactly where it was needed. He talked me through the entire procedure, Hope all goes well for you, and remember, this is just another step closer to having the cancer out of your body. I will have you in my thoughts and prayers on Wednesday. Hugs.

    Needle localization
    Hi
Judy very accurately described the procedure I myself had done a couple of years ago. I did not get local anesthesia and still the pain was only minor. I had to wait about half an hour with the wire in the breast before the actual biopsy and the only additonal pain I experienced during that time is when I made a sudden move on the side where the wire was located.

You'll be just fine with the procedure.

Let us know how you make out.

    biopsy
Hi! I had it done 8+ years ago via mammogram and I have to say, it was pretty uncomfortable but alot was the pressure from the mammo. Mine was not thru my nipple. I guess it goes in wherever the tumor or calcifications are located. I did not have any numbing. Then I had the wire in and had to drive from the mammo. site to the hospital for the lumpectomy. No, it wasn't fun but doable! Good luck! HUGS!! Cathy

I had 2 wires placed before my lumpectomy. I was *really* miserable without any numbing. The wires themselves were not a huge deal but mine were placed while my breast was being squashed by the mammography plates. That was beyond unpleasant. Afterward they taped them down and put a bandage over them and other than being careful not to catch them on something and rip them out, that part was fine. I had 2 because there were a number of micro cals and they wanted to get them all.

    wire
I had a lumpectomy 1/21/09 ... and before the procedure I had radioactive dye injected into the breast to help see if anything was going to the lymph nodes. They did NOT numb before that procedure and I've never had anything hurt like that in my life ... but thank goodness it only lasted a few seconds. After that ... they almost instantly numbed the breast and then inserted the wire. It's my understanding that the wire is inserted to help "guide" the surgeon to the exact spot of the cancer. I felt nothing.

    hugs.

    wire localization
I too had that done pre-surgery too. Its not that bad. No it was not down the middle of my nipple. They did do it while doing a mammogram and I was numbed. The tiny pricks of the anestesia was all I really felt besides the pressure of the mammogram. Theres no need for unnecessary pain, get numbed!!!!!!!

    wire
Mine was not done during a mammogram ... it was done using the ultrasound thing to help guide the wire ... then I had a mammogram (with only VERY light pressure) to be sure the wire was inserted in the right place. All very simple and painless (after they numbed the area of course).

    Needle Localization
I didn't have any trouble with my needle localization. They did numb me beforehand though. They went in the same place where they had done the stereotactic biopsy. When I had the biopsy, I took an Ativan before I went and I did very well. The day of my lumpectomy/sentinel node biopsy, I did not take an activan. I think my senses were very heightened that day and while the needle localization didn't hurt at all, I could sense the activity that was going on under the table. I was lying on a steel table with a whole in it where they dropped my breast through the whole. I don't know if all of them are done that way but I kind of doubt it. I think some are done sitting up. They were trying to go back to the biopsy site where they had left a titanium marker to mark the spot. I didn't have a lump just clusters of microcalcium deposits.

    Hope that helps!

    Radioactive Material
I had my surgery on May 4 and had the nuclear medicine injected into my breast to they could determine which nodes was the sentinel node. They did not use the dye but some radioactive material They put emla on my areola (sp?) before hand but it still hurt a great deal. i don't think the emla had a chance to numb me first. The needle prick was nothing but after that when the radioactive material went in, it felt like someone was using a straight razor to slice about 1/4 inch of my skin! Had six injecections of those but I survived. The doctor doing the nuc med said that it was a good sign when it hurt--meant it would work like it was supposed to.

The SNB was negative, they felt they got the tumor except that the margins on two sides were only 5mm instead of the desired 1cm.

See the medical onc on Monday. Wish me luck, HER2 positive and ER positive!

    Welcome, MAJW!
I guess I'm a bit late to your thread, and all the other posters seem to have provided you with the specific info you were seeking. (I did not have a "wire needle localization" - so, couldn't have helped much, anyway.)

I'm simply writing to welcome you to the group, while sorry for the reason you're here.

Warmest best wishes for next Wednesday. Hoping your discomfort, if any, will be minimal. Please let us know how it all goes for you.

    Kind regards, Susan

This is your 3rd post? Sorry, I think I missed the first 2... Warm welcome to the group, though I regret the reason you're here.

I had the radioactive injections as you did. It's really good news that your sentinel nodes were clean.

Warmest best wishes for your onc appointment on Monday. Please keep us posted.

    Kind regards, Susan

    Me, too
I had my lumpectomy December 19, 2007, and yes they did the radioactive dye procedure without anesthetic both times, but they did give me a local for the wire insertion. Yes, it hurt, but it only lasted for a few seconds for both dye injections. The insertion of the wire took only a few minutes.

The wire is used by the surgeon to locate the tumor. And the dye shows up under a special light so she can identify the sentinel node. These initial procedures are essential in making the lumpectomy quick, effective and accurate. This also translates to minimal scaring. Truly amazing how they have refined this breast surgery.

Good luck. You'll do fine. Hugs and prayers, Marilynn

    Needle assisted wire localization
    Dear MAJW,

I was scared silly the day I had a wire localization done and it didn't help when they decided to make it two wires after locating another microcalcification to check out. The nurse and the radiologist were used to scared people. They had a chair for me to sit in with a large pillow to prop my back up straight. I got to sit in the "queen's chair" as they called it while getting the mammogram. They told me I could faint if I wanted to as long as I didn't fall sideways and pull the needle or wire out! While my breast was between plates the radiologist found the calcification and then guided the needle in with me watching. They said they could give me a local, but the breast doesn't have a lot a nerves and they said it would end up hurting about as much as the needle would. That turned out to be true. I felt the needle prick when it went in, but not a whole lot more. Oh yeah, the mammogram pressure was noticable, but not painful. However, I turned out to be one of those people that reacts to the dye they put through the needle to assist the surgeon along with the wire. That raised my eyebrows for a minute (kind of a big ouchy burn feeling), but I didn't move. I didn't want to have to go through again! The radiologist apologized and said that I would probably feel the dye the second time too. Yep, I did, but again, it was uncomfortable but doable. Good luck with your procedure!

Ok, Is this what I am having
Ok, Is this what I am having to, just before my surgery in June? The surgeon told me they were going to put a wire into the tumor with the use of a mammogram and this would be here guide to the tumor.

    wire needle
I had that done the same day as my surgery and they numbed my breast first and after that first little stick I felt nothing but maybe a little pressure. My doctor likes the needle left in so I didn't have to have the wires on me for very long. The surgery also was not to bad for me. My area where they took out the lymph nodes gave me more problems as far as soreness then the actual breast surgery. Keep you chin up brighter days are coming.

    I had the wire localization
I had the wire localization also. On both breasts. Also the radioactive stuff and the dye for the nodes. They didn't numb me for the nodes stuff. Had several pricks with a needle to deliver it. It hurt but only for a moment. Then I was to have one Ultrasound guided wire and one mammo guided. Went for the ultrasound first and because the tumor was small they decided to do them both with the mammo. Sat in the queen chair with pillows. They number each breast and all I felt was pressure. They took several pictures to make sure they were positioned correctly. Because my surgeon prefers that the needle is also left in place, they put a cap on each one (sticks out about an inch and a half) and they don't want them bumped while awaiting the lumpectomy, they wrapped them with sterile guaze and put styrofoam cups over them and taped them down. My wires were just above the nipples and these cups looked so funny that I was laughing when they wheeled me out. My husband took one look and starting cracking up. I looked like I had had very bad implants done or a Madonna musical. I had always wanted to increase my cup size but that wasn't what I had in mind. It's really not that bad, it justs sound so bizarre when you discribe it. I fretted and worried about it and that was a waste of worry. I should have paid better attention to my own motto. Don't Borrow trouble!! It was no more uncomfortable than my ultrasound biopsy or the stereotactic one. And they were not bad at all.
Best of luck with all of this. You will get through it and we are here for you every step of the way. I think that between all of us, someone has broken ground on anything that might come up. And if someone adds to the mix so much the better. We all advance with each other's knowledge.
