Hi
I have been viewing this site for awhile and your discusions have made my journey in the world of bc bearable. I have a question for all of you. Has anyone received SSI benefits on a temporaty basis and returned to work after feeling better?

    Welcome to our little family! So sorry you have to join. I was out 4 days from surgery, then continued working through chemo and radiation. Some people on this site have been out, so you will probably get a reply soon with the info requested. Everyone here is more than willing to share experiences and help. Take Care

    Hi Mernia,

    I work for SSA, but not as a service rep. so I'm not an expert on the technical aspects of disability eligibility. I do know that SSI is a need-based program for the elderly and disabled. The disability must be permanent or expected to last for 12 months or more. The disability must prevent a person from performing substantial gainful activity (there is a dollar amount for this that changes every year). The process can take some time, so I would urge you to apply at your nearest social security office right away. Please visit www.ssa.gov for more information and the location of your nearest office.

    I applied for SSI disability
    I applied for SSI disability about a month ago. I dont know when or if i'll ever be able to return to work but my process was very smooth. I did the entire appl online and did everything they required. I recieved my award letter about 3 weeks ago basically letting me know that i was approved for disability and i would recieve my 1st check Oct 21st. Apparently you have to be disabled for 5 consecutive months and on the 6th month you get your 1st check. I think it's crazy that you have to wait so long to get your 1st check but hey it's the rules.
    I would love to be able to go back to work oneday and god willing i will be but in the mean time when this benefit does kick in it will sure come in handy.

    I have no idea whether you might be elligible or not, but it would be worth contacting them and asking. All they can do is say no, right? You might also look into COBRA, or ask your local ACS about other financial assistance options. The cancer center I go to has financial counsellors who can help with advice and resources. Yours might as well.

    I'm glad it was easy for you, am glad you were accepted. Sorry you have to wait for that first check...

    I don't qualify for ssd(disability) because I live in a state that has a teacher retirement program never mind that I paid into ss for 10 years. I did qualify for medicare, but had to wait 2 years for that. I am stage IV and will never be able to work again because of the condition of my back. I am 52 right now and all of my benefits will stop at age 65. Hmmmmm.
