Wait is over Surgery Tomorrow
My other fear is just vanity....what will I be left with? I know I will be afraid to look at myself for awhile but hope it's not too drastic a difference.
If anyone has had this same surgery please share your experiences.Thanks!

Surgery
Lauren, I did not have the specific surgery you will have. Sadly, my tumor was quite large so there was no question of anything other than a modified radical mastectomy. Even so, the margins were clean, so I would think your results for the tumor from 01/20 will be even better. I will think of you tomorrow and offer up a prayer for you. This is a wonderful site with so many phenomenally strong, caring, and brave women. I am sure those with experience with DCIS will be responding to you with more helpful information than I can give.0 -

Lauren, i will be keeping you in my prayers. I have not had the same surgery as you as I have had a lumpectomy and mastectomy so I cannot say what your visual results will be like. Be brave and know there is an entire network of people here to support you.

Lauren, I too had a "large lumpectomy" or segmentectomy with wire location just prior to surgery. It all went well, and I too was nervous prior to the day-had some lovely "ativan" anti anxiety meds to take so that really helped. The unknown is always frightening. I was not in any pain when I woke up, but was nauseous from the general anesthesia. I did have 6 weeks of radiation therapy about 3 weeks after the mass was removed (dcis-stage 0 and contained). I also had physical therapy that was really helpful. I will be thinking of you as you are being prepared for tomorrow. Hugs and prayers for you. About 1/3 of my breast had been removed, it was challenging to dress and look balanced. I found prints to be great hiders of my unbalanced boobies. Sports bra's were more comfortable for a period of time. My surgeon made the incision around the nipple/areola so it was well hidden.

Your Surgery
Lauren, I am the same as you. That is, I had the same thing. The surgery went well, clean margins, followed by 7 weeks of radiation. I had the ductal and lobular. I am small on top and what they removed has left a dent that is also not easy to hide too well. I was really sore for two weeks. Then just regular sore for about two months. I was also very itchy at the site. Even today there are times I am just itchy. Mainly from the nerves being juggled around and the healing process. I actually had the marker put in at the time of biopsy. Then I had two wires put in on the day of surgery. Because I am small and had to lay face down on that metal table, that seemed harder than the surgery to me. They put the wires in, in one building and then sent me across the street to another to have the surgery. It was a trick not to move and move the wires, which were taped in place. And believe me, that tape left itchy spots when they removed it! Good luck with your surgery, I think you'll do just fine. Cindy0 -

I had DCIS and a lumpectomy. They placed 2 guide wires on the morning of the surgery because I had some other microcalcs and they wanted to get it all. The wires were the worst part. I got to the hospital at 0530 and was home between 130 and 2. I was nauseated when I woke up but zofran took care of that. My throat was sore for a few days from the ET tube. My breast hasn't hurt much at all, having general anesthesia knocks me for aa loop and I was not a whole lot of fun for a few days. It's been 4 weeks and my incision--on the edge of the aureole like someone else mentioned--is pretty much healed. My surgeon did a nice job and the result looks good and is not noticeable when I'm dressed. My hubby says that one is smaller but it is still bigger than the other one! It is still hard in places but I hope that gets better with time.
I start radiation next Tuesday for 30 treatments and then tamoxifen for 5 years. Or at least that is the plan. Good luck.

Lauren my thoughts are with you! My surgeeon said that the best part of his job is "getting to toss that crap into the bucket". I didn't have the same procedure but I'm sure many of my worries were/are still the same. Allow yourself time to heal in body and mind, take drugs when needed and let others do for you. Healing prayers are with you.0 -

Hope surgery goes well and my thoughts are with you. I had a wire guided lumpectomy in 2008 without clean margins, but my breast cancer surgeon did a re-excision which resulted in clean margins. The mass was less than 1 cm and under the nipple so the incision was on the edge of the areola and it healed well. I believe she said she could take as much as 25% of the breast without problem because the breast tissue was "forgiving" and would fill in or something like that. I guess she was right because I continue to wear the same size bra following surgery 6 months ago. The shape and appearance has changed somewhat, but it's not noticeable to others. Before I left for surgery took my Xanax pill. It worked wonders! I was so calm & in good spirits which helped so much! My boyfriend of 7yrs who I live with drove me & my parents met us there. Got there at 8am out by 12:30.
I have to say the surgery seemed better than the biopsy. First they did a few mammo pix then numbed me for the wire placement which I was SO Happy it was only 1 & he taped it down. The area is my right outer. After that I went back into a little room where I waited for surgery. Everyone was so nice. My family got to stay with me til it was time to go in.
I was so shocked by the fact that I was in less pain than the biopsy. No vomiting! They gave me some Zofran & something else b/c I told them about my past exp w/anesthesia.
When I got home I just laid on my sofa took a couple cap naps & had some soup.
Didn't really need my pain med til about 9pm. I'm allergic to almost everything so I got Darvocet.
Dr. told my family there was a few areas of the DCIS that he targeted. Results should be back in about a week.
Tomorrow I can take off the ace bandage then surgi strips off in a week.
Praying for clean margins!!

That part is over! For me that was the worst and now, hopefully, the dread beast is gone. The rest is just making absolutely sure its gone.
