avastin ,do u get given this mixed with 5fu for liver mets after resection

my father has liver mets with resection on thursday ,we are offered 5fu and oxiplatin but in the united states u all seem to be given avastin .does anyone know if this mix including avastin has better results,

    Avastin has shown some promising results for advanced stage cancer. I am supposed to participate in a study of Stage II colon cancer patients where one group will have the regular FOLOFOX regime (oxipilatin/5fu/leucovoran) and one gets FOLFOX plus the generic form of Avastin. Ask your doctor's oncologist if your dad would be a candidate for this drug. I don't think everyone gets Avastin here in the U.S. I'm sure others will chime in.

    My husband was dx with Stage III CRC and had presurgery treatments, 25 rads and 6 weeks of oral Xeloda. Surgery in April, tumor was gone, resected tissue and all nodes tested clear. We opted for the post-surgery chemo that was offered to minimize any chance of recurrance. He is about to undergo 6th of 12 treatments, 5FU, Leucovoran and Oxyplatin. We were never offered Avastin. So far, our results have been great. We are praying we will not experience a recurrance.

    I don't know where you live , But Avastin is the standard treatment for Stage 4 . With that being said you also mentioned that your father will be having surgery soon . Avastin should not be given for at least 6 weeks prior and I don't recall how long after . Due to healing issues . So maybe his Dr. is not including it until after his surgery ..

    My husband is stage iv with unresectable liver mets. He takes Avastin. However, when they talked about surgery, they said he would have to be off Avastin at least 40 days prior to surgery. Apparently, one of it's properties is like a blood thinner, so you wouldn't want to be on it right before surgery.
    Hope that explains it some.

    I'm a Stage III cancer survivor, 1 year NED. I took Avastin along with the FOLFOX regimen as part of a clinical trial. I didn't have any additional side effects with the Avastin the entire time I was on the FOLFOX, however, the additional six month with Avastin alone caused me quite a bit of bone & muscle pain, which I was told is not a common side effect. They had to wait 30 days after my colon surgery to begin the Avastin and I had to wait 30 days after stopping the Avastin to remove my port because of the blood clotting risk associated with Avastin. All in all, I'm glad I took it and would take it again if needed. Here in Louisiana at my cancer clinic, Avastin is routinely given to Stage IV cancer patients.

    did your hubby have liver resection.i cannot understand why my doctor will not give my father avastin .tis really worries me
