Hi Howard, yes I did make a decision to take chemo
I will have the port put in tomorrow, Wed. and start chemo on Friday. A very difficult decision, but my family wanted me to, plus I want every advantage to not have it come back. Thanks for asking , I will let you know how it goes. Glenda

    Hi Glenda,
    Have you considered taking an oral pill vs. injection via port? My mother is taking oral pill Xeloda. I was told that it has the same effect as injection. The pill is easier. Just food for thought.

    I was stage 4 nearly 5 yrs ago...today, cancerfree. You can get through this. I still have my port, and plan on removing it on my 5 yr anniversary. When they implant it, have them access it so when you get your chemo on Friday, you won't have to be poked again. They can access it while you're still numb, and avoid pain later. Stay strong.

    Let me know if I can help alleviate any fears for you. I know a thing or two about a thing or two!

    5 YEARS, Stacy???? I thought I was too far at a little over 1 1/2 years...maybe I'll keep mine, too. (ESPECIALLY if it means NED...)
    But I really appreciated my port...even was fed thru it during one of my bowel obstructions...I HATE needles, so it was used for both Chemo treatments.

    Hi Glenda,

    I think you made the right decision. When my dad was first diagnosed, we weren't sure whether or not to do the more aggressive treatment because of my dad's age. We weren't sure how he would tolerate it. Well, he is 76 and finished his 4th round of avastin, 5-fu, oxaliplatin, and leukovorin. So far, he has been tolerating it all pretty well. So, if he can get through it, you definitely can. Also, the port is great. I was a little apprehensive about him having a port rather than just be poked every time he goes for the chemo, but I believe it has saved his veins from collapsing. The port sounds scary at first, but it really isn't that big of a deal, and I'm glad my dad has it.

    Hi Glenda,

    I have a port and doing the folfox treatment. Which chemo drugs are you getting? There is a great cream that works to numb the port area called emla cream. You put it on at least two hours before they put in the IV. I think it works great. Might help too since you just had the port put in. I waited about 4 weeks before they started using mine for chemo.     And good luck - I am glad you are comfortable with your decision and personally think it is probably the right one.

    Thanks everyone for the kind words and encouragement. The installation of the port went fine, just a little sore. I will definitely let you know how the chemo goes. love to all Glenda
