Hi all,

I just finished chemo and am desiring to start back on some supplements. I get really nervous about taking supplements...well taking any pills in general.

I see a Naturopath at Seattle Cancer and Wellness Center. She has told me about a variety of things I can try. I have bought all of them (ouch! says my pocketbook).

After reading the contents of some of them, I am little concerned. Many of the doses are way over the RDA. I have read in Quillan's book that the RDA is a survivial level and can be exceeded, but I'm still concerned. Here are the levels

B6- 250 mg 1x a day - 10,000% RDA - Sloan-Kettering's website states chronic over-dosing over 200 mg may damage nerves. I'm taking it to try to heal my nerves!!

Multi-VIt contains :
Vitamin C - 1417% RDA
b12 - 7500% RDA
Thiamine - 2667%
Pantothenic Acid - 4130%

I'm also recomended to take BCQ, mushroom extract, vitamin D, glutamine, lipoic acid.

Lots of pills....I'm concerned about overloading my system. Anyone else have these concerns? How did you resolve it for yourself.

Thanks : )
Maria

    Hi Maria,

I took a ton of stuff at the beginning and I never felt b etter. I don't keep up that pace now almost 5 years later (that ouchy pocketbook) but if you are under the care of an ND I wouldn't worry about it. You are in the get your body up to snuff stage post chemo.

It sounds like you're taking all the good stuff. I took even more...like quercetin (for inflammation) and coQ10, and Vit E with Selenium, and Chinese herbs (won't even try to spell those), folic acid, and the list goes on.

    And I did fine.

    you will too.

    Hi Maria,

I agree with Emily. If you are seeing a ND they do know what they are doing and you should voice your concerns to them. I think Patrick Quinlan's book is great. I also read the SK info about B6 and it is scary. Good Luck from someone else trying to figure out the best supplements to take.

Hi Maria and YAHOOOOOOOOOOOO on finishing chemo.

I too agree with Emily. The B vitamins are most of the ones you listed and chemo just wrecked the heck out of them all............. They will replenish your blood levels very quickly which in turn you will notice very soon as the cells that are produced the quickest are replaced (hair, skin, nails, intestines)...... The multivitamin my ND recommended has all those high percentages of RDA also. I did not think twice about taking it and the only nerve damage I have is from the damn Oxilaplatin (chemo).

FYI..... I am 51 and now have less grey hair then I did before I got sick. And you know the rest....I am still NED from my stage iv rectal cancer.

    Hi Emily : )

Since day one, I have been ambivalent about alternative healing methodss. I want to do it, but I worry so about it. If you remember my several posts about this problem, you and Scouty may want to say "enough already!" - Maria should just not do alternative medicine ifs he has such a problem with it.

    : ) lol

Well I wouldn't blame you...it drives me nuts. I get all geared up to do it, but then worry. Maybe I should be taking those other pills (psychological ones..lol)

Did Scouty take all the supplements right after she got off chemo. Or did she give her a body a rest before giving it more stuff to process? Aother thing my body is going to have to process, is I'm likely going to be starting on Hormone Replacement Therapy (for early menopause at 34).

All this stuff needs to be processed by my liver which is about 1/2 normal size since liver resection in January.

Oh....I'm taking quercitn too...it is the "Q" in BCQ - Boswelia, Bromelain, Curcuminoids, and Quercitin.

I think I'll likely take a couple things here and there...rather than start everything at once. I wonder if it is still effective if you only take it now and then.

    Thanks Emily for your help!

    hi maria!

There are some supplements that compliment each other and you need to take both for them to be beneficial. Unfortunately I am not sure of the combos. Your ND will know.

You spent the money.....try the program. I KNOW it can get so overwhelming. And we also like to go into denial....as in ....this is NOT my life.... as we swallow 20 vitamin pills 3 x's a day!

One step, one day at a time.

    peace, emily
