My friend with rectal cancer just finished a 5 week episode with Xeloda and radiation. After the treatments he developed a few skin lesions that soon became painful and infectious. He spent Christmas in the hospital on an IV of antibitics. No one one could confirm for sure if this was a side effect of the radiation. Has anyone out there ever had a reaction like this? He's doing better now, just using cream to treat the wounds.

    Hi Musiclover,
Unfortunately we all react differently to treatment ,so there are few fixed guidelines ,what they do know is that cancer ,chemo and rad all suppress the immune system and lower blood counts as a result any infection is potentially dangerous and has to be treated quickly and effectively. I can only guess but I'd say your friend has had a reaction to rad and the rash has become infected possibly from scratching . Don't stress too much about it just deal with it quickly if it occurs Ron.
