husband going for surgery next week

WOW! We are completly overwhelmed with all the quick responses we have recieved from all of you wonderful people giving us lots of hope, which is sometimes hard to have. He had to have an illiostomy done back when he first started treatments due to the fact that there was blockage. That was very hard for him to deal with. The doctors are not sure if he will require a permanent colostomy after the surgery, it depends on how much the tumor has shrunk. We are hoping for the best. Once again thank you for all the responses, it is nice to know that there are people who have been through it and survived.

    Hi,

    I was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer in 3/03. It has been a very rocky road that includes chemo/rad., 3 surgeries, 11 hospitalizations and MANY TEARS. Today I remain cancer free since my surgery in 6/03. I also had a temp. iliostomy that was reversed but left me with frequent diarrhea, occasional incontinence, and a constant sore bottom that was painful. I had surgery for a colostomy and got my life back. I work full time as a nurse and also have 3 kids. I was diagnosed at 46. I am planning my daughter's wedding that will be in August. Life is good now.

    It will be rough going for your husband for a while, but it will get better. Good luck and keep us posted.

    Not much to add to what my learned colleagues have already told you.

    I would say that your husband may be "testy" for a while - it's normal and it's not a reflection on you or the kids. It is difficult to deal with it when your body "betrays" you the way his did. All I can offer is tat it's probably a guy thing. Be sure to treat yourself and the kids at times. You will be spending a lot of emotional capital and you will need to get it back in some form. A spa day or just a movie out is a good way to knock the edge off and "escape" for a while.

    Actually on the lighter side of things we do also have our resident humourists here...Bob being our stalwart although he tends to go awol without leavin a note. Me...well...I just hold tha fort 'til he gets back, errrrr,,,,,try too!
    You will find that although the serious stuff is the most important subject on this board we do try to make life a little brighter...a laugh or too hopefully injects that added bit of security and comfort.

    Hang in there, my husband was dx in Aug 03, with stage 3 rectal cancer. He had a colon resection and temp ileostomy. He had problems with it and did not like it. He's very active and he felt it interfered with his life. But we came to the conclusion that its really a small price to pay for something that may save your life. He remains cancer free today, scans are in 3 weeks. Always have hope, and this is definitely the place to come for any kind of information and inspiration. I don't post much, but I read all the time.
