Hi, I'm new here. My youngest sister, who is mentally and physically handicapped, had a breast removed in 2002. The tumor was quite large and the dr. had said that the cancer would probably return elsewhere. She was diagnosed with oral yeast infection today, and her gp wants her to see her oncologist. She had pneumonia about a month ago. She hasn't been acting like herself for the past week. My question is: if the cancer has recurred, can oral yeast infection happen?

Thanks....

Oral yeast infection may be related to a poor immune system or just poor oral hygeine. Would recommend follow up since she might not be able to verbalize real well if something is wrong. Also, noted she had pneumonia, if she was on a lot of heavy duty antibiotics that can cause a yeast infection. Hope this helps some.

    Hi there,
I believe pneumonia can require some high power antibiotics, thus may cause oral thrush. This is an easily treated condition with medicine and oral swish. The GP will probably culture her throat to discount any recurring cancer. I have heard from members here that they eat yogurt while on antibiotic therapy to help minimize or prevent oral yeast. Hope this helps. God bless.

    Hi mim:

Would like to add that if your sis can take pills easily, you can pick up some acidophilus for her.
It has millions more active cultures than yogurt and without the calories. I use Primadophilus brand. (It must be kept refrigerated though) If your sis is often on antibiotics, this will help prevent oral as well as vaginal yeast infections and can be started as soon as she begins antibiotics. I used it during chemo also. You can find it at any good healthfood store...the better stores keep their acidophilus refrigerated, prior to selling, so as not to damage the cultures.

    Hope that may help some.

Also, Ink, there is liquid acidophilus available at health food stores and such... might be easier to take and needs refrigeration.

    Be well,
