I am an RN student and I would like to know what the nurses who care for you could do to better help you? I'm anxious to get your feedback! Please reply!

At the time of my surgery, I was unable to speak clearly and could not swallow fast. Be patient and allow time for your patient to tell you what he/she needs. I even had a pen and clipboard on my bed when I was connected to a respirator in order to get my needs across to the staff. Don't underestimate any type of communication. I was writing in air requesting a pen/paper and a nurse understood what I was asking for and it made my stay in ICU for the rest of the week that much better. Just because a person cannot speak, open your mind to other means of communication.
