DNA Treatment Research?

My best friend has been examined,biopsied,and diagnosed with a particularly aggressive form of breast cancer all in the space of just 4 days. Two days from now she will meet with her doctor about beginning both chemo AND radiation therapy IMMEDIATELY. They said she must undergo treatment even before surgery is considered.(is this normal procedure?) My question is: A friend of ours told us about a program he watched on PBS recently regarding research in treatment involving reconstructing or manipulating one's own DNA to combat cancer cells in the body. Unfortunately, He does not recall the exact nature of the treatment, the name of the episode, or the doctors involved.(He only caught bits and pieces of the program.) What he COULD tell us is that Portland, Oregon is where this research or treatment is being conducted, and from what parts he DID catch, SOMEONE is having some success, or coming closer to a breakthrough in this area. Has anyone out there watched this program or know of anything happening in Portland? I've checked the PBS website and found DNA research in Oregon, but saw no mention of Portland. We would be so greatful if anyone could supply us with any information at all about this or any other promising methods of treatment in the Pacific Northwest.
