in Colorectal Cancer #1

well folks its been a long time since i've posted on here... but the date has been set.. feb 20th for my moms surgery... 

good news is she found a doc that will not give her a colostomy bag!!!!! its a hairline difference, but it can be done!! 

bad news is they have to rip open from her T to her A to get it done.. and the cancer spread to another lymph node... 

so we will see how it goes!!

    Tell your mom good luck from all of us...

    a good surgery can make all the difference, so it's great that she is able to have this done.  I've gone under the knife five times, and they have all been the open style of surgery that your mom is getting.  My surgeon prefers it, feels like he can really see everything and make sure he gets it all.  It's not fun, but it's doable.  In most cases, people are feeling pretty decent within a few weeks.  And I've been NED for 14 months (after having this stuff spread all over the place), so maybe being opened up like that helped.  Is your mom taking cimetidine for the surgery?  There's some evidence that it can help stop the cancer from spreading during the operation.  I took it for a week before and a week after my last surgery.  No way to be sure if it helped, but it was my last one, so maybe it did make a difference.  Might be worth having your mom talk to her surgeon about it (although it's an alternative approach, so he may have never heard of it...mine hadn't).  Ann Alexandria

    Like AA, i've had 4 open

     

    Like AA, i've had 4 open surgeries, (1) colon resection and (2) liver operations and the latest was a node in buried in my gut somewhere.  My surgeon shares the same opinions as AA's, it's better to see cancer in person. I've been dealing on and currently off with cancer for more than 8 years.  To make a long story short, my incision was a "5 x 6" Chevron cut  "L shaped, I was out of the hospital in 4 days. They sent me home and told me to take motrin for the pain, I kid you not.   Bottom line is that it's truly remarkable what surgeons are able to do these days. In my case they didn't use staples or stitches, they used surgical crazy glue which has worked great andI was back to work in 2 weeks.
