more uncertain news and more waiting
so we went for the consulation in reference to brachytherapy. After the doctor examined my mom he found "something" close to the tongue or rather more on the floor of the mouth. Said it's a little bump that is hard and he is not sure at this point if it's a scar tissue from radiation or post surgery tissue or another…

Retreat slowed me down more than planned
I went on a much needed 5 day spiritual retreat on March 11 and promptly broke a bone in my foot. I was so upset, not about the bone but about maybe having to leave. I was able to stay for 4 days but our son had to drive Jim over to get my car home. It was the first time Jim has driven since diagnosis in May 2011. He did…

Scan Prayers and update
I wanted to give you guys and update on my dad. He just finished 9 rounds of chemo for his reoccurance of tongue cancer. He has done really great just a few issues with low blood counts. His oncologist feels like the cancer is gone again. His plan is to do a CT scan this coming Tuesday and then if it looks good they will…

Whew!
Came up on the good end following recent scans and exam. Mark (SCC Stage IV tonsil HPV+, diagnosed April 2010, finished treatment of surgery, chemo and radiation July 2010) was told today "no sign of cancer" and "can almost called you cured". I am guessing the "almost" is that no doctor will give a 100% cure stamp. We went…

Swelling after Total Laragectomy
I had my Total Laragectomy surgery on January 5th this year, comming up on 12 weeks ago. I still have a lot of swelling & my neck under my chin is hard as a rock as is my neck on both sides of my face. I have talked to my doctor about this & he does not seem to be concerned about this but I really don't like his attitude.…

pregnancy and H&N cancer
It was around this time a year ago my blood test showed my prolactin level was 3 times higher than normal. I was referred to an endocrinologist who ordered me MRI scan to confirm pituritary tumor was the cause of my prolactin levels to elevate. Indeed, I was diagnosed with a small benign pituritary tumor which I was…

Tongue Biopsy
I had mucoepidermoid carcinoma of my left submandibular. Finished treatment (surgery & radiation) Jan. 2011, have had clear PET/MRI since. My question is I recently found a lump on my tongue on the underside the same side as the cancer. I went to my onco, who ordered a MRI and wants to see me in a month, or if the lump is…

Osteonecrosis
Andy went to the periodontist today because he has been feeling exposed bone inside his mouth in the jaw bone. He was told it is osteonecrosis from radiation and/or the Xgeva shots he gets for bone metastasis. He will see an oral surgeon tomorrow but, the periodontist says there may be problems with healing in his…

Just checking in, and a small thank-you gift
Am a year out of chemo/radiation and just had a clear PET/CT scan 2 weeks back. In physio for neck fibrosis but otherwise doing really well. Way luckier than many. In fact, my band even recorded a 10-song album in Nov-Dec 2011. If any of you like early-style punk rock and roll/power pop, you can download the whole thing…

throat/tongue pain
How long did your throat/tongue hurt after radiation? My husband said his throat and tongue still hurts like heck. He is taking 4 hydros a day for pain. He is 9 months out. The doc told him to watch his tongue and make sure it does not get infected. I am just wondering, the body is an amazing healing machine. What is it,…

I've done 8 Rads of 2nd set (1st set was aimed at temple so no issues and done now). These are with the mask aimed at lymph nodes left side - taste buds are going - still can taste sweet but not really much else. I've been drinking carnation instant breakfast, milkshakes. Anyway, my throat is getting more sore with dryer…

Hello to my fellow NPC cancer survivors
I have seen quite a few posts from survivors that were diagnosed with NPC last year. I am just curious to know how's everybody doing so far since I was diagnosed with stage IV last summer also. My first post treatment PET and MRI are clear, hope all of you are getting the same result!

Husband is Recovering - Trach Question
My husband continues to recover and seems to be getting better every day. He had first post op appt with surgeon Friday and he said he is doing well. Only issue he is having is he gained TWENTY POUNDS of water/fluid from fluid retention. Needless to say, he is on lasix and it is slowly coming off. Doc said not unusual when…

Turkey Neck and Phlem
I know these topics have been discussed before , but for the life of me couldn't find the past threads. After coming through all the treatments with little or no issues, I now have this "turkey neck" going on which I think is large under my chin & across my throat area plus I have this phlem that seems to be stuck in my…

Jevity 1.5
Is anyone in need of some.? I have a couple of cases I did not use and would hate it to go to waste. It expires in July. I am even happy to pay to ship it. We had to argue with our insurance company to even cover it as they believed it was unnecessary. How can they pay for a PEG tube but deny coverage for the sustenance…

Is peg tube removal painful?
Andy's doctor thinks he is ready to give up the peg tube in a few weeks. He is convinced that it is going to be very painful. He has the type that has an internal bumper (not a balloon). Spool...what's it really like?

XyliMelts for dry mouth
This time release oral lubricant works great while sleeping. I tried it last two nights and no need to get up at night to drink water. It stimulates saliva. Anybody tried this product for long term use? Is it safe? It claims it is made with all natural ingredients.

Benecalorie...any one use this?
I'm looking for some reviews of the Resource Benecalorie product. I read a couple on the Nestle web site.....some say great, some say it tastes awful. It's supposed to have no taste. Just wondering if it's worth the purchase. Aslo how about the Resource Breeze? Thanks!

Collar Bone Drop
Hi Everyone 7 months ago, I had a radical neck dissection which removed the SternoCleidoMastoid muscle, IJV but thankfully preserved the accessory nerve (bruised it though leading to a painful shoulder for about 5 months). I'm a little confused though as the collar bone on the RHS has now dropped about 4 inches compared to…

Rad Onc Says NED
Ned again...but i got an off the wall answer. She said since there is no signs of recurrence that she wont order a PET or MRI. She said Kyle, believe it or not you beat this thing. Supposed to be happy right? Me, the first thing I think is about all the new aches and pains I have and how they could be METS and I should get…

Maintenance chemo like Erbitux
Happy to report I had my first clean PET scan and last chemo last week. I'm still on my 5FU fanny pack until Monday, but so glad to be at the end of treatment! My chemo doc is researching putting me on a maintenance chemo like Erbitux. Of course I'm hoping I don't have to do this, but what from he tells me about Erbitux…

To old friends and new...
It has been just over a year(!)since my husband was diagnosed with HPV+ tonsil cancer. I don't check in as much anymore...is that a good thing? My husband has been doing very well. We both feel very fortunate. Fortunate for good health right now, fortunate for those on this board who helped "us" get through it...you know…

External Beam Radiation
I'm about to receive External Beam Radiation for Papillary Thyroid Cancer, 5 days a week for 6.5 weeks, and was wondering if anyone had any advice. Not many thyroid cancer patients have to get XRT (EBR) so I've been advised to check out some of the other head/neck cancer threads. Any info or experiences would be helpful! I…
