Choosing Hope - Stage 4 - what next?
Hi Folks, First post here having just been told by the medical world that they have run out of ideas for my wife (age 45). A quick history. Stage 3 colon in 2013. Op and 6 months chemo to catch the rogue. All good. 4 years later it has shown up as "stage 4" in the liver (2.5cm tumour) and in two lymph nodes (which only…

Chow down. Weight loss correlated to lower survival rates.
Once again, from the "for what it's worth" department, a new study indicates weight loss (even for the overweight) is correlated with lower survival rates. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28841225 At the 5-year postdiagnostic survey, 2049 participants reported higher (53%; median plus 5 kg), unchanged (12%), or lower…

Seeking advice: continuing with chemo or seizing the opportunity of surgery?
Hello all. My father was diagnosed with stage 4 rectal cancer in mid-July. Conoloscopy found the mass in his rectum (5.6 cm in length), and then PET-CT scan confirmed metastases in his liver (up to 9 cm), lungs (0.2-0.6 cm), and lymph nodes. CEA was 346 and CA 19-9 was 238 as of July 21. So, it was very serious and his…

The Cycle of Life
Everyone: When I was diagnosed with rectal cancer in mid May my primary concern was what impact it would have on my daughter-in-law, who was pregnant with our first grandchild. She lost her father to lung cancer at an early age and that loss remains with her. I did not want to increase that pain by being yet another father…

74 yo mom with Stage IV Perlmutter vs Sloan Kettering plus trtmts
My mom is 74 and we just has the shocking discovery that she has Stage IV colorectal cancer. It was discovered during a CT scan when she couldn't move her bowels for over a week. She had surgery but the mass in the upper left quadrant was "stuck" and the surgeon said it was too dangerous to remove, so he left it and gave…

So today after a second ERCP in two weeks we finally know his cancer is back
its been months of hell and a ton of jaundice. The two tumors on his liver are both metastasis from the original cancer. He did not do chemo after his original colon surgery in 2010, or after his liver resection in 2014. Now he has no choice and last time when they explained it to him he panicked. Part of me thinks maybe…

Folfiri and crappy feeling stomach
Would anyone who had folfiri chemo please comment on how they felt afterwards. The day of chemo, I feel very "off" - possibly the 4 steroid pills (told to control nausea and get no sleep that first night) and the anti-nausea pills - and then the avastin and the chemo cocktail. My eyes are very affected (think it is the…

On capecitabine, fast heart rate
Okay, I am four days away from ending capecitabine and last night I experienced a heart "flutter" then an elevated heart rate (109bpm) for a few hours. I considered going to the emergency room, but made it through the night. I have a call in to the doctor and the nurse said this is a known side effect to capecitabine.…

Not Pregnant
Everyone: There is nothing as precious and promising as a pregnant mother, so please don't take any offense in the title of this post. I selected it because it is very descriptive and relative to my condition, plus my daughter-in-law is currently enduring the last two weeks of her third trimester and she relates to this…

43 Yr Old Wife Diagosed with Rectal Cancer Last Week
After having some rectal bleeding on and off for a few years, my wife got a colonoscopy on Aug 7th. A new study (abstract only in link) indicates melatonin increases the effectiveness of 5FU: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/28819759 Once again, from the "for what it is worth" department, here is additional melatonin information from my rather disorganized notes: Preliminary positive: 2017 article,…

Low CEA
After reading various posts and seeing scores all over the place when I finally got mine I was surprised. It was 1.3. From what I've read that's within the range of a person without cancer. The last couple blood works that came back do show some elevation in white cell activity over the initial readings which is expected…
