PET scan
Sorry I haven't posted much lately, I've been on a bit of an emotional rollercoaster lately and didn't feel I could really be of much help to anyone so I've been staying away from the boards. I usually only respond to the posts to congratulate someone on a good scan or when someone has finally met NED. A brief background…

Recently diagnosed with metastatic melanoma facing Radical neck Dissection and have questions
I have been dx'ed with metastatic melanoma which is baffling the Dr.s as it 1st showed up in a lymph gland. They are doing radical neck dissection at the end of the month followed by radiation and immunosuppressive therapy as they say my kind of melanoma does not respond to chemo. I know not to believe everything I read on…

Best short tips for handling chemo/RT
In the course of my recently finished 37 RT sessions and 6 chemos for a tumour on the root of my tongue, I came across a few good ideas and suggestions which I had not found amongst all the tips in the basic help literature. I thought it might be a good idea to start a "discussion" so that people could contribute their…

Half way done!!
Hi everyone! Just wanted to pop in and update... Thursday I had my second chemo and Friday I had rad # 17 of 35. I think as far as symptoms go, I'm holding my own. Saliva is non-existence but luckily I have almost no pain (yet). I did end up with thrush with was not pleasant at all but once it cleared, back to no pain! I…

Is radiation related hair loss permanent?
I lost 2 weird looking semicircle patches of hair at the base of my neck. May have been related to that plastic molding my neck sat on during radiation. Now have very fine hair, perhaps 1/16" in those areas. Also, my facial hair is for the most part gone. I'm sure others here have lost hair due to radiation. Does it ever…

Regaining appetite and taste
Hi everyone, I'm new to the site, an Englishman living in Germany. Finished 6 weeks of Cisplatin 3 weeks ago (1 dose a week) and finished 37 sessions of RT last Thursday - hooray! My tastebuds were shot after just 2 sessions of RT and 0 chemotherapy, but worse was the fact that I developed an aversion to food (and drink)…

Hiccups
Hi everyone. My husband had his first treatment Wednesday. We were there all day. He had Taxotere and Platinol. Got there around 8:30, treatments started around 9:00 and we didn't get out there until almost 4:00. Came home and an hour later a nurse showed up to give him more. I think that type is called 5FU. He will be on…

Alternative Cancer Treatment does it work or is it a Myth.
I have always found that it is hard to talk about something if you don’t have a common frame of reference. A lot of us here can talk about Conventional Cancer Treatment because we were all treated for cancer and we are either living or dead. I take nothing away for our doctors; they are people just like us and everyday…

No the news we were hoping for
Buzz had a PET scan June 2 and the results are not the clean scan we had hoped for. A new spot has showed up on his tongue since the last scan 3 months ago. The suspicious area in the right neck is now larger and "brighter". To add insult to injury, he has a clot in his left Jugular vein and so is on Lovenox, transitioning…

Hello and looking for advice
Hello Everyone. I was diagnosed with Stage 2 nasopharyngeal cancer on March 21, 2011. I am a nurse practitioner who worked in geriatrics. I'm 50. I'm now still on short-term disability. The journey has been painful, humbling and eye-opening. I had a PEG tube placed. It is a button style. If I could do it over, I would have…

Hi Everybody, Sorry I have not been on the site in awhile. Just trying to move ahead with life. No excuses I know. Sorry about that. I do think of everyone on this board very frequently and still think how lucky I was to find this site to help my husband (and me) through treatments. An update on my husband, Joe, (SCC…

Recurrence
Husband just had first pet scan and two spots lit up. One In hip. One in femur. We are baffled because I have never seen anyone post in head and neck forum about metastasis to bone. His biopsy is Friday. Anybody have experience like this. Needless to say we are scared... Robinleigh

Dental Insurance and cleanings
I thought I would share with everyone that I just did get my Dental Insurance to approve cleaning of my teeth every 3 month (rather than every 6 mnths that the plan states unless you have paradontial issues) due to the radiation I received. My dentist wrote a lengthy letter stating the damage radiation can have on the…

Healed from BOT excission/tonsillectomy
Two weeks today since BOT excission/tonsillectomy and I am eating normal again and swallowing well. I start chemo/rads on Monday, 13 June. I am really not all that worried, most folks agree that a tonsillectomy is more painful than treatment. I can just say that I hope that holds true, as it was pretty tough. I am just…
