CT skan results not conclusive
Hi Well I finished my radiation for SCC in the tonsil and three lymph nodes in March. I just went back for the CT Skan and was hoping to be cancer free. The tonsil appears to be cancer free, but one of the lymph nodes is 12mm and they do not want it to be more than 10 mm. The doctor said they were pleased with the results,…

Feeding Tube?
Hey folks, I know we have a super thread on the feeding tube, and I have read it and hundreds of comments on it since being diagnosed. I think the feeding tube may create more of a problem than a solution based on my circumstance its physical. That said I know some Skiffin and others that did not use a feed tube, and some…

Starting week Four
So today starts week four of treatment for both radiation and chemo. Here's to approaching the middle of chemo! I know it's not the middle of radiation, because I'll cook for a couple weeks after, but it's still nice to mark some milestones! The lump of coal in my throat comes and goes. It turns out part of its return was…

I just returned from a visit to my rad onc and he scheduled my next PET for Sept which will be 7 months since my last one which was 3 months post rt. After that it will be annual. I know there have been discussions in the past about CT vs PET so I asked why not CT. In his opinion PET is the best for determining if there is…

Tongue continuing to be very swollen after Feb 2012 partial glossectomy and follow up radiation/chem
Hi everyone...I am writing to hopefully find some answers and/or support that I can bring back to my Dad. After deciding on a partial glossectomy (late Feb) to treat his tongue cancer (2 prior smaller sugeries, a first round of radiation and a chemo-like treatment kept it at bay for less than a year the last time), my…

Need Help/Information
My husband was diagnosed with laryngeal cancer in July of 2010. He underwent 35 radiations and 2 chemo treatments of cisplatin. A PET scan in late November 2010 showed all clear. In February 2011 he was having trouble breathing and our radiologist sent him directly to the ENT. He was put in the hospital, had a biopsy and…

I am scheduled to start radiation in one week, may 14th. My tongue is still not healed completely from the tumor removal surgery, did anyone start radiation before the tongue healed? My doc thinks it is okay to start but i am concerned. It is almost healed but it is still sore as not all the stiches are out. Thanks, Sam

benefits of adjuvant chemo after concurrent radio+chemo in NPC
My treatment plan is being put in place except that my radio oncologist and medical oncologist have different opinions on whether I need that follow up cisplatin + FU5, called the adjuvant chemo. In my case, I was diagnosed as stage 3 NPC (T3N0M0, EBV+) in mid of April. The T3 is because the tumor touches bone structure at…

What were your very early symptoms of vocal cord cancer?
Hello, I'm a 27 yo female and was diagnosed almost 10 years ago with the high risk Hpv during a gynological exam. I have read about Hpv increasing risk for oral cancer and it has me terrified. Around Christmas I got laryngitis and after I got better I still couldn't make high pitched sounds. It got a little better over a…

Maximum rads
So I have a question. I've read in posts recently something about having been given the maximum amount of radiation. I'm naive, I guess, because I didn't realize there was a max level, but I did know it seems that everybody has about 35 treatments. So here's my question: is that maximum for your entire life, or if you have…

Taking Some Control at Doctor's App't
Saw my ENT today. I like him, think he's a great surgeon. I'm about two months out from having Cyberknife, which fried my tongue. This after a surgery in the same place two months earlier. I have a sore on my tongue right where the surgery and radiation were. It's mildly painful, but not awful. I can eat fine. It has…

Denied scans---your experiences
My insurance company denied my upcoming scans. Their decision is based on the NCCN guidelines, Follow-up recommendations. These may be the same criteria used by your insurance carrier. For comparison, I was base of the tongue, stage 4 and have had small lung spots show up on previous scans without significant change. This…

Proton Beam Therapy
Anyone try this yet? Pat, I was thinking of you and the whole issue of re-radiation. I wonder if this very new and limited treatment would have less side effects? Hopefully I don't have to find out but it always pays to think ahead. Adam Yauch aka MCA of Beastie Boys fame is dead at 47. He had cancer of the parotid gland…

Hello, lump of coal in my throat!
I guess I'm officially in week three, because now that the thrush is dying down, I have a burning lump in the back of my throat. Did it feel kind of like an obstruction to other folks? I guess that might depend on where you were radiated. My sessions have something like 12 positions (the doctor did a LOT of mapping),…
