Preventative surgery

Hi!

I am 37 years old. I have not been diagnosed with cancer, but do have lynch syndrome, which puts me at a higher risk for ovarian (colon, uterine, and brain) cancer. As a result I get a colonoscopy every year, and a uterine biopsy. I also have my CA125 levels checked annually and get an ultrasound of my uterus annually. 

My OBGYN and my oncologist have both suggested preventative surgery removing my uterus and fallopian tubes. This way I don't have to get a uterine biopsy every year. I was wondering if anyone on here has had experience with this type of surgery. If so, did you have to take out your ovaries at a later date? What is the recovery process like? What are the side effects, etc?

    Preventive Surgery

    I'm not a doctor so I can not give you anything but my opinion. From age 18 to 45 I had menstrual cramps so bad Sometimes I passed out. I bled a lot and my bleeding would stop after a few days and start again for a couple of days and stop again. I suffered from fibroids having them removed more than once. When I was thirty five I begged my gynecologist to do a hysterectomy but she refused to because I was still in childbearing years even though I told her I never had and never would have children because I didn't want to give my Type one diabetes to a child. Now I am 56 spotted pink a few times so my new gynecologist ordered a sonogram after she felt that my lining was too thick, the result was 13mm, not good. The next step is a biopsy. I was told 13mm is extremely thick and most likely cancer. If my Gynecologist back then respected my wishes and did the hysterectomy I would not be facing cancer today. Its your choice not mine but I would definitely get a hysterectomy, preventive care always beats treatment. Good Luck.

    I normally hangout on the uterine board which is very active. Hopefully you will get good results from your biopsy and won't need any help! But I would suggest you vist us there as it appears if you have a problem, that's where there are ladies and discusing threads that can help you! 

    I don't know if you noticed, but the post you responded to was made 5 months ago. And yet you are the first one to respond. This board is very, very quiet and that happens a lot of the time. Also, people post one time and never come back. 

    And it's just my opinion, but also the opinion of many on the uterine board, that if you need a hysterectomy because the biopsy showed cancer, you need to have a gynecological oncologist do your surgery. You would need staging at the time of surgery and you want a GO to do that!

    You probably know this, but most people also report that just a biopsy may not be conclusive. If they don't happen to grab cancerous tissue, you would get a false negative result.
