anyone have esophageal cancer after having Rny gastric bypass

in Esophageal Cancer #1

I am facing surgery for an esophagectomy for stage 3 cancer Jan ,2021. I had RNY gastric bypass surgery 17 yrs ago to lose weight. Because of that it could be hard to be able for the surgeon to pull what little stomach I haave up. Has anyone else had this surgery after gastric bypass and how did it go? I am a 71 yr old woman and surgery will last 8hrs. Am getting a little scared so hope I can get info from someone.

    Hello Pat,

    I'm unfamiliar with your circumstance.  However, your situation is a prime example of why it is of utmost importance to go to a top of the line hospital with top of the line doctors.  I can only assume that havig a bypass will make an esophagectomy more complicated.  You obviously want a very experienced surgeon.  This is no time for learning on the job.  I'm sorry I can't offer anything specific about what you're looking for, but know that I'm rooting for you.

    Hi Ed, I am having my surgery at The University of Iowa cancer center. My Dr is a cardiac and pulmonary surgeon. He does esophageal cancer,heart, and lung transplant surgery. I am praying that he will be able to get my surgery done without complications. His name is Dr Parehk and he has been surgeon for quite a few years. Thank you for rooting for me . It means a lots. I am 71 yrs young and shouldn't be so scared. I have a lot of friends praying for me so that gives me some comfort.

    Hi again

    My surgery is 1-15-21. Action begins with me getting there at 5:30am. Which means I have to leave home at 3 am for travel time. My husband has to drop me off and can't come in because of covid-19. The surgical asst will keep in touch with him by text during procedure. I will probaby be in ICU for 2-3days before get to a regular room. If you send the awsome thoughts on the day before I will be able to read them while doing prep. Thanks again for your reply.

    Hello Pat,

    That absolutely blows that your husband can't be with you for your surgery.  When I had my esophagectomy, my wife was stuck in a waiting room for 12 hours that was supposed to be 8 hours.  There were complications.  But I had top of the line surgeons, so it all worked out.  

    My stage III surgery was in 2008, nd I'm still kicking.  Even after two stage IV recurrences.  I'm 53 after a couple/few terminal EC diagnoses.  You can kick it's ****, too.
