Only 2 rounds cisplatin

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

My husband only had 2 rounds cisplatin due to hearing problems developing. Completed all 35 radiation treatments without interruption. Anyone else experience this?  We were told only about 50% complete all 3 due to side effects.

    I also was only able to tolerate 2 rounds of Cisplatin. I was very weak and not able to eat by the time the third round was due.  I was also told it was common. All worked out on the good side for me. Wishing your husband the same positive results!

    Cisplatin - hearing

    I already had tinnitus before starting treatment. I did complete the Cisplatin regimen, and it certainly appeared to make my hearing loss more pronounced. I am now a candidate for a hearing aid - although I feel I can follow most conversations, as long as there isn't background noise. I suspect that hearing aids will be a necessity at some point in my life!

     

    I'm glad to hear he was able to complete his radiation, and I'm sending my best wishes for your husband's recovery!

    2 rounds cisplatin as well

    I also only completed 2 of 3 rounds of cisplatin due to hearing loss and tinnitus. I'm 44 and initially wanted to see how it affected my quality of life as the loss wasn't bad. But after a few days I decided that I didn't like having to constantly ask people to repeat themselves, not hear people sitting behind me, etc. So I visited a board certified audiologist and was fitted for hearing devices, which is a multiple month process to adjust them to where they need to be (it's a prescription). So far I'm glad I did it. 

    I also only completed 1 of 2 planned rounds of 5FU due to significant side effects that ended up with me hospitalized. But my oncologist felt that I'd had enough. 

    Pro Tip: for hearing assessments / devices / etc, do NOT go to anyone other than someone board certified, even if they have other letters after their name. At least in FL, anyone with a high school diploma can sell you a hearing aid. Often times they'll fit you for one and it's way too loud and so people give up. An actual audiologist formulates a prescription and starts you off with a lesser amount of amplification, adjusting it every few weeks until you are good.

    Been on or monitoring the Forum for over 10 years, and it seems like 50-50 is about right for the 3rd round of Chemo. I was 55 and able to get all the Chemo & Rads they had planned, but it's the Rads that did by far the most damage, short and long term.

    I was treated with 35 radiation and 3 rounds of cisplatin almost 1 yr. ago.I am 62 and for the most part it hasnt effected my hearing outside of the ringing in my ears.

    Cisplatin

    I had 35 rads and 3 Cisplati. I have a lot of ringing in my ears too. I would of thought the hearing issues were from the radiation treatments. I also have been diagnosed with stage 3 chronic kidney disease from the Cisplatin. I am 8 months post treatments and 1 month post neck dissection. Head and neck cancers are the cancers that keep on giving.

    Being treated for any head and neck is tough on people and the standard treatment seems to be 35 rads and 3 chemo treatments. And I am with cyfont once you get through the treatment there are lasting side affects and other things to deal with. You certainly have to adapt to what they call your "New normal"

    I only had 2 rounds and the 2nd one was delayed by weeks. Totally trashed my hearing. They did do a good job checking. Had a test prior to 1st treatment. After 1st and after 2nd treatment. That was 10 years ago. The radiation is a 100 more times devastating. Had surgery last year where they did a radial arm free flap operation. All due to radiation side effects. Cancer was a cake walk compared to this surgery and the lasting side effects from that. 

    Radiation is a pain in the you know what. Still NED after 10 years though.

    I managed to get 3 out of 5 Cisplatin infusions before they told me "no more."  The hearing loss was not noticed immediately, but was quite bad.  Either my brain adjusted or my hearing got better, or some of both, but I feel like my hearing is mostly back. My tinnitis is worse than it was, but not horrible, and I am another three years older (hooray!).

     

    On the whole, my "new normal" has exceeded my expectations.  I'd rather be 32 again, but hey... I'll take it.

    Had different Chemo 2 drugs since My Cancer Dr didn't want me to have those side effects.  But I agree about Radiation, I was way over radiated & by 4 yrs No saliva, 0, nada so miserable.  Also thyroid shot.  Sinuses a mess he radiated too much.  Had stage 1, possibly 2 but later tongue was NOT envolved.  But mine was a patch of skin, nickel size of a nickel to quarter of skin where My left tonsil once was.  No lymph, HPV but fully blasted on both sides.  I have no taste buds can't eat much smells & tastes horrible, constantly desert dry, and all the Drs said was you are alive but have many side effects from the Chemo.  I have No quality of life, constantly sick from stomach/intestinal problems, low sodium requires many IVs & 6-8 1,000 mg of salt tabs daily.e   Already had a stroke, but never was asked what I wanted, not allowed time to get second or third opinion since they pushed Me so hard to start treatments immediatel.  They felt since I had the patch for 3 yrs ( all Drs & Dentists) I asked said it's nothing so traveled Europe & felt great.  No feel horrible most days.  Have to see Dentist constantly trying to prevent losing teeth, scared for jaw bones since he radiated from nose to collar bone.  Old machine, no pinpointing they lied totally about My treatments.  Cancer doesn't kill you treatments do

    Yes they are, nonstop for Me for 4 yrs now.  Tired of being sick and not capable to enjoy anything I use too.
