You seem to have had more than your share of issues post-treatment, which is quite unfortunate.  I do hope things improve for you soon.

Hi, I was told that after

Hi, I was told that after treatment, the radiation effects might get a little worse before getting better. Everyone reacts differently though! For me, a week after finishing radiation I landed in the ER because the exit site of the radiation beam was so painful I couldn't go at all so I stopped eating to avoid going to the bathroom. They gave me morphine, and I took it for a few weeks before tapering it off. I am only 6 months post treatment, but I'm doing very well considering. Some hip pain, some itching, little nerve pains in different places. GI issues, especially gas. Others here have said that things can change even years after treatment, so it's one day at a time.

    Morphine, too.

I briefly took morphine for the radiation pain so that I wouldn't scream when I was in the hospital and people flooded in to see what was wrong.

    I agree.

It took at least a year+ before I started to feel more normal, strength-wise. I lost more weight after treatment stopped than during it. Once I was strong enough to drive again, I had to carry Boost with me at all times for quite a while because my blood sugar would suddenly plummet too fast to even order fast food.

I have some complications that I'm afraid aren't going away ever, though, like urinary incontinence (seeing a MSKCC Urological Oncologist next week to see if there's anything I can do at all) and poop-alary incontinence when it gets softer (I can control formed). I also have lymph edema in my left leg. I'm going to the MSKCC Lymph Edema Clinic tomorrow. For some reason, it's worse in the heat and now the docs are killing another lymph node on top of previously dead ones.

    For American vets....

I don't know how Canadians deal with their veterans' healthcare, if they have an equivalent of the Veterans Administration or not, but in the USA, the VA will provide incontinence products, without a co-pay, for vets that are obliged to use them. The selection isn't great and they sometimes switch products mid-stream (I just noticed the pun), depending on their manufacturer deals, but they ship right to your home. (I'm not a vet, but The Uncle is.)

    An hour?

You waited an hour for your appointment? That's practically de riguer in the USA. Yesterday, several radiation machines weren't working at MSKCC, so I had to wait 3+ hours to be zapped. It was a marathon of waiting!

I give oncologists and some other docs a pass about wait time.  For the most part, I don't think they are deliberately double booking : often it is necessary to fit someone in who is having a problem.

Also, I am guilt of having abused h physician time by asking lots of questions and wanting lengthy explanations.  I assume some docs have

patients like me and give them the time that they need, often for psychological reasons!

    you are not healing because

you are not healing because you are still smoking. you should stop. a curable cancer has visited your body and been treated so why are you inviting cancer back into your body via smoking?  if anal cancer comes back it goes to your liver & lungs next. i can not believe you invite it to your lungs. so disrespectful to the doctors that are dedicated to curing your cancer that you continue to smoke. from someone that smoked 1=2 packets a day for 35 years. gave up got cancer am healing. would never smoke again.
