Reseach Survey Today

My survey was over the phone today for CSN.  She never asked me to download any software, was very interested in my experience on the boards, especially why my decision on becoming a member, the reason why joining, my posts, my involvement in the boards,  the reason why I've stayed active after 9 years.  She asked some personal questions, but nothing that was uncomfortable.

The survey was to take about 40 minutes but I'm one for expression and detail so it lasted a little longer.

She never cut me off while giving an answer and was thanking me throughout the interview telling me how helpful my answers were.

If it could help the board in my input than I'm glad to help.

Just wanted to let you know it was a good experience.

Kim:

There may be two different surveys ongoing.  I was contacted via the personal messaging on this forum by the CSN seeking my participation in the survey that you described.  I decided to not do so.  In the meantime, someone else posted that they were conducting a graduate school research survey - a totally different effort and that is the one that raised suspicion and required softward download - I THINK.  I could be mistaken, but that's my understanding.

The survey I was asked to particiate in was via the computer. I had signed up for one a few years ago, and recieved a call which led me through the process of linking my computer to theirs; that is when I decided not to do it. I will never participate in a study that takes control of my computer. I would possibly do a study over the phone though.

Thank you Kim for sharing your experience.

I too wonder if there aren't different surveys.  I did take the survey  from the  grad student at University of Albany, which is the one airborne72 flagged and had removed.  That survey was pretty innocuous and  asked only for  age, gender and ethnicity in the way of personal information.

The survey request I received from CSN on August 8  I was wary about, when I read this : " We will provide guidance to help you install this software if you don’t already have it. It will allow researchers to see your screen as you interact with CSN. Once the interview is complete, the researchers will not be able to see your screen anymore."  I don't use video chatting software like Skype or Google Hangout and  don't want to install it. The e-mail also gave a link to learn more about the study but when I clicked it, there was an error message. Here is part of the  body of the CSN e-mail: "The American Cancer Society, in collaboration with Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the University of Pittsburgh, is seeking feedback from current Cancer Survivors Network members. We need about 30 volunteers to participate in a one-on-one, remote interview with CMU researchers. You will be asked to share your story and insights about using CSN. . .

You will also be asked to “share your screen” and show the types of threads you read as well as the people you interact with on CSN. In addition, you will be asked for feedback on a feature that shows recommended content and CSN members that may interest you. Your insights will help ACS assess new features and designs for CSN.

The interview will last about 35-45 minutes, and you can join from your home, office, or someplace else private using video chatting software like Skype or Google Hangout. We will provide guidance to help you install this software if you don’t already have it. It will allow researchers to see your screen as you interact with CSN. Once the interview is complete, the researchers will not be able to see your screen anymore."

But she never asked me to download anything but did bring up my first post which was surprising and asked me about that.  She seemed to have been taking information because asked me a lot about responses that I'd given.  Everything was over the phone except her sending me links to my first post and one about another member that keeps bringing up a post that was one I'd started way back after his surgery last year and wondering why the post is still active.  It seemed like a legit interview, but she never asked me to download software as I've got nothing installed as far as video chat.

So, people are watching our posts, eh? That is a little unnerving for sure.

If they can pull up our posts, I wonder if we can also pull them up as a set. I've often thought about that first post of mine, and the rebuke I recieved from a forum member who 'popped over' from another part of CSN. I've tried to find it by going back to the year I joined, but without success.

Thanks for sharing this information, Kim.

I'm not taking it as "watching" our posts.  This was a survey on the Board as a whole and how it helps us connect with people.  Just found it very fascinating that CSN has contacted a study on our Boards to see how it helps us cope, interact and deal with our situation.  Once I agreed to participate, just believe it was their way of seeing how we post and how we used the Boards as a way of information, and healing.  Didn't find it offensive in any way that she found my first post.  Thought it was very interesting because I've searched for it before and never found it.  If they ever needed my input in the future, I'd be happy to help CSN find out how the boards help us people just needing some help and answers.  And you're welcome for the info Smile.  Just wanted to let others know it was a good experience for me.

I took the first survey and was asked to screen share so they could see me and I could see them.  It took a lot longer than 40 mintues though.  I was on the phone with the gal for at least an hour and a half.  I have to admit I kept drifting off subject. I was asked about what brought me here.  Well dah!,  cancer of course but I had to add to that I needed to get in with people in the same boat since the hospital staff wasn't too clear in disclosing all the details which in of itself was unnerving.  I didn't hold anything back and even discussed some of the after affects of radiation/chemo.  I even had to take a bathroom break in the middle of it. I did get a second invite last week for something else.  I guess it's a follow up of some sort.

Just thought it was an interesting survey.  I've never downloaded any skype or facetime to my computer so they were ok with just the phone.  My answers were somewhat long and precise.  She didn't seem to mind.  Your answers sounded a lot like mine.

I did a survey a few months ago that I found on Twitter. I was able to verify the Professor running the research and the other professor that did the interview.

I'm always afraid of any survey but especially social media ones.  Glad you checked out the sources before doing it.  That always scares me.
