One year NED

Options

Hello Everyone,

I have not logged on for quite a while.  I just wanted to update that my husband is one year post treatment and he had his one year follow up and everything looks great!  He did not have a scan as the insurance only covers one at six months out and that is it.  He had an unknown primary, so the doctor is going to fight for a scan in August.  However, he said that the scope up the nose and down the throat is the most important part of the exam anyway.  They also feel all the lymphnodes and all feel normal.  My husband is 99.9% back to pre-cancer normal.  He still fights occasional dry mouth, but spry gum helps with that.  His singing voice is almost back so we hope to be out gigging again by the end of summer.

It's good to see Andy and Frokker have also passed the one year mark.  I have not looked too far down the board, but I also remember talking with MM Downs as well and hope her husband is doing well, too.  :)

Happy summer everyone.  Stories and positive updates gave me hope when I was in the pit of despair, so I hope this positive message helps those who were just diagnosed and / or are going through treatment.

    Yay. Congrats!

Yup,  I just passed my 1 year mark since treatment ended.   That was 29 June.  I am also NED and am scheduled to have my chemo port removed next month.   Tomorrow I am seeing a speech therapist not for speaking but for swallowing.  No pain, sometimes foods don't go down at first.  I have a few other side effects from chemo/rads, dry mouth, stiff neck and jaw, neuropathy in feet and hands, fatigue and ringing in ears.  Beginning to wonder if those will ever  get better. ..

    Question re: Port

Hi!  You mention having your port removed after one year...do folks commonly keep them in that long?  M y husband finished treatment in April, and the doc seems Ok with removing his any time now.  He's only had one post scan, which was good.

    YaaaaaaaaaaaY Congrats

Nothing better for us folks than to get to a milestone of NED (No Evidence of Disease)

When you are in the worst of this treatment and recovery it does sometimes feel like

you are in a pit of despair since everything in this recovery is slow.

So glad your husband is doing so well.

And for frokker68 check out throat dilations to help your swallowing, mention it to your speech therapist or family doc.

And for ProustLover I had a port and it was there to save my veins from lots of infusion liquids and chemo I had mine out after they figured I was mostly done with my main treatments any chance to need it anytime soon.

Or if I did need a small amount of something intravenous it would be.

    Singing voice

    Hi Chicklette -

You mention your husband's singing voice is almost back. My singing voice has been a casualty of all this (laser surgery, full neck dissection, 30 rad treatments) and I'm wondering if it will ever come back. Did your husband have speech/vocal therapy or do any specific exercises/regimen to try and get the voice back?

I've played in bands on and off for 30+ years and would like to be able to do so in the future, if I can get the voice back! Thanks
