The drugs, ipilimumab and nivolumab, are already used with remarkable success in the treatment of deadly melanoma skin cancer. Nivolumab is also used to treat advanced lung tumours. The new trial found that the combination achieved significant kidney tumour shrinkage in 42 per cent of the 425 patients in a trial and reduced the risk of death within two years by 37 per cent.

    Success Indeed

    Annie,

    Thanks for thinking of me.

I was on the same or similar trial, and luckily my side effects were minimal, unlike what the man in the article had to suffer.  My tumours  also all disappeared after about 12 months - three-monthly CT scans have been coming back clear for the last 18 months.  I am still on fortnightly Nivo but that does not worry me at all.

We don't know if this is permanent remission or just temporary relief, or what happens if I stop taking the Nivo, but for now I am delighted to be able to live a normal life with virtually no restrictions on what I do, eat or drink.

I like to think there will be many others with mRCC who will benefit from this.

    Best Wishes,

    Fred
