I lost my ability to sing

I had a thyroidectomy in 2015. No mention was given of any mistakes or damage to my vocal cords, but my voice was hoarse immediately thereafter. It has been over two years now and I still cannot sing or talk loudly without losing my voice. I am so sad about this. I heard mention on the forum of certain types of doctors who can help with this? What are they called? Has anyone had experience with these doctors? Can they actually help? I so want my ability to sing back - it has resulted in a severe depression that I cannot sing. It is a huge part of my life. My endocrinologist mentioned putting me through to a voice coach but I don't know if my insurance will even pay for that and I am not certain that is the right first step towards healing. Any input would be appreciated.
