Received another clear scan!!! Should the report say "NED"

We are 10 months post surgery and just received news that our 3month scan was good. Our family doctor explains that it is clear, but as I attempt to read it it says, "no new findings"  but never says "NED". Isn't that the magical words that you want to hear???

I have many "clear" scans in 8 years but none said "NED"

It appears that some radiologists use No Evidence of Disease (NED) and some just list their findings or lack of findings in the write up they send to your doctor. Some will say “no indication of recurrent neoplasm” or “no change from last review” etc. My CT scans always note some abnormalities related to my esophagectomy and a couple of small cysts next to my liver. When I first started to read my scans I was concerned about those things but now I have gotten used to seeing them there.

The important thing is that as long as your doctor feels there is no need for concern that is good news.

At 10 months out from treatment I am surprised you are not having follow up visits with your oncologist. They see a lot more scans than your typical general practitioner. My oncologist followed me for five years after my treatment. He then discontinued scans and now I just have an annual endoscopy. But I never saw a CT write up from a radiologist that said “NED”.

It sounds like you have good news to celebrate. May there be many more!!!

    Congratulation, GREAT NEWS!!!!

    Hello Amie,

Twice I've been declared free of cancer, and I've never actually seen/heard the words, "No Evidence of Disease".  I've been told that the scans show no cancer.  I've been told I'm in remission.  The test results have read, "no local or distant metasteses".

If I were you guys, I'd be thrilled with those results.  Sounds like you're a success story in the making.  But as Paul mentioned, I'd want to hear it from my oncologist not my GP.

Many, many years more to you guys,

    Ed
