Back Pain/Sacrum?

in Anal Cancer #1

Have any of you had lower back pain/sacrum with your cancer diagnosis?  My lower back pain started with the rectal pain over two years ago. They did every test known to man ,MRI's catscan's even a Petscan. They found that I have Grade two Spondolothesis in the lumbar spine and recomended a spinal fusion. However the neurosurgeon refused to do the surgery unless my Osteoperosis was treated first. He didn't think it would fuse if I didn't take a drug called forteo. Thanks again for all your input. My appt is tomorrow and I plan on asking the Dr. the same questions I've asked here.

    Low back pain

    I felt my pain was generalized in the hips mostly and some in the lower back.It was an achy pain. I guess after your dysplasia is treated wait and see how much back pain remains.

    Low back pain

    I've had low back pain since before my diagnosis and continue to have it but I've been plagued with diarrhea and it's always worse if I'm having diarrhea. I was told it's my sigmoid/rectum causing my pain. Sorry Ive never had back pain before so I don't know anything about it except for what I have  now. I hope you get some answers.

    It came on suddenly pain

    It came on suddenly pain below my butt it wasn't a backache be in radiating down the legs into my feet giving me nuropathy and it was diagnosed from an MRI as a fractured the Sacrol. Now I'm told it nerve damage from a well known back dr. Two months later Im taking Motrin ever 6 hrs that wears off in 3hrs Gapapentine 300 mg every 8 hrs Tylenol in between and still no relief. I have in to taking Tramadol 25 mg once a day before bed taking it in the morning makes me groggy no way to start the day. Going to proctologist soon to see if the tumor has something to do with it all if it's grown. Anyone out there please let me know.

    I have no information to hlep you, but hope that you see a good doctor that can help you get a handle on this.   Maybe the radiation made the bones weaker??? But I am just guessing.  Good luck seeing the new doctor.

    Pelvic radiation raises the risk for insufficiency fractures.  I'm not sure exactly what that is or how,it is treated or what.....and, yes, I think pelvic radiation does have an affect on bones.

     

    in another site, Blogforacure, the Anal Cancer blog has some new members and some long time members; the issues of osteopenia, stiffness in hip joints and everything else related to AC is routeinely discussed.  Lots of excelllent information on this stie,

    Lower back pain

    Hmm, not so unusual then!

    I too have had severe back pain, especially after standing just to cook dinner. Pain radiating down my legs. Lower lumber pain increases when my bowel starts to build up faeces, for a stool movement, even way before I needed to use my bowels. The pressure is awful.

    Sitting on the toilet for a long period of time - as I do - allowing my bowel movements to finish, causes pins and needles down my legs and toes.

    I have since been to a pain specialist and had a week in hospital as they investigated the cause of my pain.

    The doctors ran SO many tests trying to pin down my problems. Bone density showed severe osteoporosis in my pelvis. Nuclear bone density showed 'hot' inflamation in my left sacrum. MRI showed a vertical fracture in my sacrum. 

    I had been suffering pain for over six months and the doctors kept asking me if I had suffered a fall to cause the fracture. I haven't had a fall.

    The deduction of the fracture was the weakening of my bones contributed to the radiation treatment for the anal cancer. The fracture that I had sustained is what is expected to be found in an 80yr old woman - I am 59, no fall; being four years out from treatment - radiation and chemotherapy.

    I have had sacroplasty injections, which have amazingly cleared the mind numbing pain, to a point where I can think straight again. I am so grateful. Further, I have been started on injection treatments for osteoporosis, to help slow the deterioration of my bones.

    I have been cancer free, but pain shadows me. I still have quaility of life and managing the pain is now a part of it. I have also been getting lower S5 injections to help relieve the pain too. Every little bit helps :)

    Heat packs are a favourite of mine especially at night. They really help to dissipate the pain, I even move the heat pack onto my leg to help ease the aching there too. I try not to take any opiods at night, as my sleep becomes disturbed. Tramadol gives me bad dreams - so heat packs and panadol are my go-to at bed time.

    I hope this helps you to understand what can happen and that the consequences of the cancer treatment, it is ... painful but, worth the life that we have left xx

    4 weeks out of treatment -

    4 weeks out of treatment - radiology and 2 rounds of chem. I am also experiencing "new" back pain that I did not have before treatment.  I have had 2 spinal fusions and truly don't get much relief from it.  My doctor says "well, it it stable so there is nothing more I can do".  The new pain feel deeper, in the muscles and beyond.  Likley something else I will have to live with.  I did read that bone damage, particularly the hips, can be caused by the radiation.  So, you get rid of one pain and trade it for another.
