Thin Stools

I am a 17 year old male, turning 18 next month. I have always held my stools as a child, I don't really know why, just have. This has led to serious constipatition that I have never really done anything about until about a month ago now when I had blood in my stool after I passed a very large stool. My Doctor also says that this has led to an enlargening of my Bowel as well. He recommended me to take Miralax so I do and was fine the first week. Now I feel terrible, headaches every day, weird spasms in my left side, gas, and the scariest was thin stools. When the stools are thin they tend to be very mushy and stuff and are about 1.25x the size of my middle finger, width and length, and there are lots of them when I go. I had these about a week ago, they went away after 2 days and stools were normal. I had diarreha last Sunday and they were normal throughout the week until this weekend when they started becoming thin and mushy again. I'm pretty scared since I have read that these can be a sign of Colon Cancer. I'm going back to doctor tomorrow to discuss these things but what should I do??

Have your doctor take a look..

It may be nothing (i.e. Not Cancer) as you are so young.

You may want to get a Colonoscopy to get a better idea. Your doctor may recommend it.

I wish had one ten years ago. I had constipation which felt like someone kicked me in the butt with a pointed Cowboy Boot.

    Best of luck!

    Quit the Miralax

OK, check it out with the Doctor, but at 18, I can't see that taking Miralax for more than a couple of days is good for the body.

Getting control of your bowel through diet would be a much better idea.

I too was a kid who 'held it', and in my heart I knew that one day I would get Bowel Cancer and I did, but not until I was in my 50's.

Not saying you can't have Cancer. I have a good friend who was diagnosed in her 20's, and there are several cases of teenagers getting it, but it is rare.

Going to your follow-up appointment is a good idea.

I'd still look seriously at your diet, and see how you can improve things that way.

    Good luck!

I have changed my diet a lot

I have changed my diet a lot in the past month as well, I ate nearly no fiber before and also ate and drank a lot of sugary things. I have radically upped my Fiber intake and stopped drinking and eating sugar a lot. Could this have an effect on some of my stools lately? Also My stools being as mushy as they are, could this be the reason for them becoming thinner when the muscles push them out?
