sweet and spicy foods

in Head and Neck Cancer #1

It has been 8 years since I had chemo and rads for my throat cancer. Side effects from the start were neuropathy in my feet and tinnitus, little dry mouth but not much. As of the past few weeks my mouth has gotten a lot dryer but manageable. Tried some spicy wings a couple of weeks ago and it immediately burned the soft and to somewhat the hard pallette, could only spit out the first bite. next to go was sweet stuff, chocolate, toffee et al, could eat it but with some discomfort afterwards. Now my favorite food in the world has become inedible too, called a rajun cajun hot dog, got one today and nearly died on the first bite. Is this caused by the dry mouth? Denis

    Not Sure...

    I am only 5 Weeks out and have a pretty dry mouth.  From what I can tell, the dryness causes texture issues more than sensitivity.  Hard to imagine why after 8 years, things would be going backwards.  We like to think that things get better with time, but I know that is not always the case.

    Hope this is just a phase and that things improve soon.

    6 Months out.

    I am six months out and can only drink water and milk. No pop, beer, flavored water ect.. I also can not eat chicken, pork, and fruits. The fruit is just the most hidious taste I could ever imagine. I like to think the dry mouth is improving slightly. Maybe just wishful thinking. Well' I hope you can get your issue figured out and eat a plate of hot wings for me. I miss them dearly.

    Like Sprint car dude I am 6 months out with dry mouth issues and it's hard to eat most foods. I can drink some pop and beer but only so much as it burns my mouth after awhile. I try different types foods and some are tolerable but mostly I eat a soup based diet with added calories in all  my soups. I drink a couple boost plus with chocloate milk to add more calories. I look at food in a differnet way now. I remember how good a steak or hot wings and all that good stuff tasted but cannot eat any of it. Hope to get some saliva to be able to eat normal again someday but then again, we all have a new normal after our treatments. And we shall survive and go on!!!!

    Hey Mapdan,  I found that eating a good Ribeye steak cooked medium rare on the grill with no fat trimmed off works pretty good. You might want to give it a try. I save the big fat globs and cut them into small pieces and use it with each bite. Makes the steak slid down pretty dang good. Good Luck.

    thanks Sprint car dude.  I know there is a story behind that name!! Going to try the steak thing this weekend on the grill. Need to try different things.

    H&N rule 52 says “spicy wings are known to conflict with rajun Cajun hot dogs, but the adverse taste reaction is short lived and should return to normal.”
