Blockage

in Colorectal Cancer #1

Mom had her colosotmy on Tuesday, came home yetseday. Doing ok except can't not seem to drink or eat very well. Dr won't call in anti nausheu meds in case of an obstruction? Anyone have and experience with this.

    I assume it's the same thing for a colostomy blockage as it is for  an illeostomy blockage and you're supposed to drink lots of fluids to try to get the blockage moving. It's hard because the last thing you want is food or drink. I tend to drink ginger ale. My blockages make me feel so sick and physically tired it's horrible. The other thing I was told is to move from side to side while lying down to try to dislodge it. Every 20 minutes or so, not quickly.

    Good luck to her, I'm not sure my advice helps because her surgery was so recent, it might not be the same thing.

    Is feces flowing into the colostomy bag?

    I have a colostomy And had a hard time the first week I was home. I think it was due to the pain meds after surgery which caused a backup to the bag (pancaked) so nothing was flowing into the bag. Once I changed the bag I had this problem once again. (Just once)

    Watching my diet and volume when I eat has reduced my problems. I have had no problems with my bags.

    My mom went back tot he

    My mom went back tot he hospital to be sure, they pumped her with fluids she was dehydrated not being able to keep much down. She had a "blow out" while there but feels much better today and is back home and while her appetite isn't great she is tolerating fluids and doing all around pretty well for only a week out of a 9 hr surgery

    Sounds like my experience.

     I said I "pancaked" but I think it's what you referred to as a blowout.

    Due to opioid constipation, I got backed up at the bag. When I removed it, it blew out. It happened twice. 

    I realized it was mostly due to my diet and how I slept. Now if I start to pancake I change my bag.

    My mom is 10 days out of

    My mom is 10 days out of surgery and doing ok, stinks she can't sit at all only lay or stand and is still pretty weak to stand for more than 5 minutes. She hasn't had much output, she feels ok she said she was going to clean her stoma maybe stimulate it, she told her home health nurse and they called the dr but didn't seems to concerned

    then she'll be throwing up with or without antinausea meds.  There's simply no place for the stuff to go.  when I had an obstruction two months ago, I threw up every night.  I wasn't nauseated but really bloated and up it came.  If she's still not passing much, try chewing gum.  A recent study shows that it stimulates the gut, walking does as well, but from what you say she can't do much of that yet.  My HMO, is really conservative, but they suggested gum because my intestines were really slow to get moving this last time.  I was 10 days post-surgery before I got even clear liquids.  I cannot believe your mom is home already.  Wow!

    As I recall, and as much as it hurt, the getting up and moving around helped things flow the most. It's hard to do I know, I hope your mom feels better............................Dave

    We couldn't either, she came

    We couldn't either, she came home after 3 nights! After a 9 hr surgery! And she's diabetic! Pays $800 month in health insurance and they want to throw you out as soon as possible. Physical therapy and the home nurse has been coming. Everyday is a little better, tbis was a recurrence of anal cancer from january of 2015, and came back February this year she had intense radiation last time so she he says at least she feels a little better everyday than worse with the radiation. They took all her lymph nodes as well even though pet scan showed nothing so she just nervous waiting on those biopsies
