Newly diagnosed

in Ovarian Cancer #1

I had a hysterectomy on Tuesday because of my right ovary being the size of a football.  The doctor came in yesterday to talk to me, it was Mucinous Carcinoma (spelling?).  Obviously we won't know the stage or grade until all the pathology is back.  She said she is fairly sure it is stage 1 but the cyst leaked while they were removing it because it was fused to my colon because of old scar tissue. Scared to death right now.  So many thoughts going through my head.

    So sorry for the reason you are joining us online...but WELCOME!  This is a great collection of ladies ( and some men) that can provide first hand info or just be there to hear our fears & frustrations. I was diagnosed stage IV  oc early in 2009.  It's been a rough ride but here I am after all those years. The disease has totally rearranged my life, but good things happened along the way also. Take some hope that Stage I has a much better prognosis......great that yours was discovered early. I would advise you to ask questions, be proactive in your treatment & use this site often to get opinions or just to vent. Much success to you fighting the fight,

    My schedule won't permit my answering you this morning, but I'll definitely be back with info that I have learned about your cancer.  Just wanted you to know that collectively we can help you, so stay tuned!  We've had the same surprising, shocking news that you've just learned.  Take care of yourself and rest after the hysterectomy.  You might want to tell us how many things were removed.  A cancerous ovary "fused" to the Colon--oh my!  Frown So this would be a good place to continue to check in because so many here have "been there--done that" so to speak.

    Sorry, PlantLady, no doubt this is hard.  Mucinous ovarian cancer is kind of an oddball in the ovarian cancer world.  Many doctors tend to treat it the same way that they treat all epithellial ovarian cancers, but researchers aren't clear as to whether this is the best approach.  If I was in your shoes, I would seek out a specialist, who has extensive experience with this specific type of ovarian cancer to find out the latest treatment options.  I hope all goes well for you and the pathology report brings you good news.

    She came to talk again today.

    She came to talk again today.  The good news, pathology called her yesterday to let her know the tumor (cyst) looks like it may actually be intact and what spilled was a smaller cyst.  Fingers crossed.? She told me today that she can not say what type it is yet.

    Please make sure that they confirm the origin of the tumor

    My tumor encompassed my ovary, but it had originated in my appendix, and therefore was treated with a completely different protocol than is used for ovarian cancer.  Make sure you find out the definite origin of your tumor.

    Left ovary was gone already.

    Left ovary was gone already.  Lost it to endometriosis 8 years ago.  Tuesday she did a full hysterectomy, the right tube and ovary, omentum, and appendix plus lymph nodes.  She wants to schedule a colonoscopy once my body is ready after healing from the surgery.  She said the ovary was stuck to the colon from scar tissue from endometriosis and my previous surgeries.  Today she would not say if it was Mucinous Carcinoma, which is what she said yesterday.  She just said she would give me all the info at my follow up.

    Btw - mine was mucinous adenocarcinoma

    Once you have your details, you may want to look for a specialist, especially if your cancer doesn't fit the common mold.  If you are ever uncertain, get a second opinion, again, optimally with a specialty cancer center.
