Hello All,

I had surgery on October 12. and am now at home recovering. They took out my right kidney and the tumor. It was a hell of a thing to go through, but I did it. I am now at home suffering from bloating and constipation (they gave me Norco for pain which has constipated me). I am not feeling a lot of pain and will not take the meds unless I really have to. The bloating and constipation sucks. I just took some Milk of Magnesia and hope it works. Anyone have these issues?

I am waiting for the pathology report which should be ready in another day or so. I see my Urologist and Oncologist in the next week. Hopefully, they caught this early. My surgeon told me he did not see it speading, so I can keeping my finders crossed.

Thank you all for being here and sharing your advice and experiences. It made this ordeal a little more manageable.

Iggyrip

    Good riddence

    Iggy,

Now loosen up when that big day arrives. Nobody in their right mind wants to be constipated then.

    Iggy,

    Iggy,

I had my left kidney + tumor out on Sept. 22.

It sounds like they let you go home pretty quick. For sure stay on top of the constipation any way you can; prune juice, suppositories, etc.

I'm back in the hospital because they missed a second tumor on my spine that finally compressed my spinal cord, while home from the nephrectomy, to the point that my legs quit working. They cut as much of that out as they could on Oct. 1 and are doing radiation therapy to get the rest. My pathology was stage 4. I'll be getting chemo later for some other straggler tumors.

Even with all that, for some reason, I'm not all that worried. They know what it is now and have a plan of attack. My lower extremety function is coming back in rehab, thanks to the crazy neurosurgeon who went in to cut out the spinal tumor. I feel like this will all pass.

Hope for the best, prepare yourself for the worst. I'm betting you'll end up leaning somewhere on the "best" side.

    Constipation

Not that unusual.  Between the anesthesia, pain meds, decreased activity.....pretty typical.  Glad it's behind you.

God Bless and hopefully your path report will reveal a long future for you.

I am glad the surgery part is

I am glad the surgery part is now over. Constipation is treatable. So please consult your primary for the best advice on how to treat it. Not only are you given oral pain meds (mostly opiates) but the General anesthesia meds have not fully been metobolized for days. Our organs are also "paralyzed" during surgery so the surgeon can careful maneuver.

I used a lumbar wrap and placed dry ice packs over the incisions. Whalla.. instant relief not needing pain meds. Or use tylenol with ice packs.

Keep us informed. How ya doing with the trapped gas pains, any? Again, during surgery they pump up the abdomen real big so the surgeon can SEE and that gas gets trapped in crevices inside the body cavity, mostly the shoulder. I would wind up my arm around and around to try and move that gas out.

Keep us informed. Sorry you had to go through all this, But like me, the cancer seems to have gone with the removal of my kidney!

    gentle, healing hugs,

    Jan

    Thank you for your responses.

Thank you for your responses. I stopped taking the pain meds because I noticed I was not in a lot of pain. Now, there is some pain but I can handle it. Without the opiate pain med (Norco), my bowels have stated functioning. I will take the meds if really needed, but I can do Ok without them right now. Hopefully, my pain does not increase. It has been more than 48 hours since I last took the pain med, and its bearable. Thanx to laproscopic survery and a good doctor.

On Jan's advice I have been using an ice pack to help with swelling the pain. Thanx Jan.

I now await the pathology report and my official diagnosis.

    Goodnight all,

    Iggyrip

    Dont forget your breathing excercizes!

    Yeah, my wife keeps reminding

Yeah, my wife keeps reminding to do them and brings the little plastic machine I am doing as much as I can. My doctor and the nurse taking care of me made sure to tell me and my wife to do them. I'm on it. Thanx Stomper.

    Glad to hear

Glad to hear you are over the surgery.  I avoided the narcontics too.  My surgery was on a Friday and my last narcotic pain med was Sunday morning.  I was able to handle the pain with some tylenol, but my bowels were stuck in park!  I tried a lot of different things like prune juice and Miralax.  Finally (through the suggestion of my brother) I ate chia seeds with some oatmeal.  That did the trick.

I wish you well, Iggy.  Hope to hear a good report from your pathology.

    Blessings,

    Stub

    Iggy

You are on your way to recovery so happy for you that all went well. For my constipation I have been eating watermelon pretty much every night for a snack. Also cherry juice helps a lot. God speed and good thoughts.

Glad to hear your systems are getting back on track

Glad to hear your digestive tract is getting back on track and on task, Iggyrip. The oatmeal and chia seeds sound like a good combo any time, Stubbs. Teashea, watermelon and cherries sound yummy, too.

May your recovery time be a good time for you, Iggyrip. Even the waiting parts.
