Ileostomy Reversal Question

Hello Evryone,

Hubby is having Ileostomy Reversal tomorrow, He is on liquid diet today just like the prep for colonoscopy and LAR. We forgot to ask the doctor,.. Why he need to be on 24 liquid when he does not use colon since he has ileostomy. Hope anyone share the answer.. Thank you

    And yes i still can't believe it's been a year since my husband diagnosis,.. And i still remember the scary feeling around that time, like my world was upside down. Your words are always give me comfort, making me feel better, and better for me to care for hubby.

     

    Hubby finished with adjuvant chemo about a month ago, and last week pet scan came back clear. We thank the Lord,. hope to stay clear.. And also pray for everyone who are still fighting with cancer.

    (And it is a guess)  Anyway, I would guess it is to clean the bowel out so that when they make incisions for the reversal, no nasty stuff is released into the abdomen.   

    It is good news that he is doing well enough to get a reversal.  I remember when you joined almost a year ago, and things were scary. Still scary, I'm sure, but doing much better I hope.

    This is also a guess...it's been so long since I've had it done, I don't remember for sure, but they probably want his entire digestive system clean when they do it so they don't run into anything solid trying to pass through and mess up their sterile environment. If I remember right, they kept me in the hospital until I passed gas or had a BM. Can't remember which one. I'm getting some of the surgeries mixed up. It took a while before I was released; five days, I think.

    Good luck with it! I found the experience ultra creepy, but was so relieved when it was done!

    Difficult question

    For me it never did, but I developed an anastomotic stricture at the resection site that has made things very difficult.

    I've heard the adjustment is different for everyone. Some people say it takes about as long as you had the ostomy for, and for others it's a matter of retraining the bowels to function without making you feel like you have to go constantly, or can't go at all.

    I figured out that probiotics helped me to form more substantial BMs in the beginning. It was so rough. I think everyone should take them, but particularly people with intestinal issues. I wouldn't start out with the capsuls, but they might work for him. I prefer more dietary ways of going about things, and Kefir worked amazingly while I was healing from the takedown. The only problem is there's added sugar, which is a no-no if you have cancer. I don't think using it for a little while will hurt. He can always change to something else after the initial problems work themselves out. I use Kombucha tea now.

    You can get Kefir just about anywhere in the dairy/yogurt section of the grocery stores.
