I was diagnosed with cancer of the Vocal chords in 2011. In fact my ENT orginally said "It's either warts or canncer. And you'd better hope it is Cancer, that we can treat while warts keep coming back.

Well it's now 5 years later and my ENT is just about to cut me loose.

I only had 34 radiation treatments. No chemo. After the treatment I had a period of soreness and hoarseness which has since gone away and all I'm left with is a regular occurrence of cramps in my neck muscles. Stretch your neck by looking up and massage the area. Just ignore the people who give you strange looks.

Oh! and I still have an area where the beard just doesn't grow. No hardship there at all.

That's about it. So I hope this can offer some encoragement to others.

    Congrats

Congrats on the milestone! that is encouraging. I too was diagnosed with vocal cord cancer in January of this year, I also only had radiation treatments - 29 of them. I'm only 3 weeks out from my last treatment and I still have a pretty sore throat, I know it's a slow recovery but it is getting a little better each week. i look forward to being able to say the same thing in 2021!

Good luck and I wish you the best

Congratulations hitting the five year mark, and checking in so the newer ones know, and get the encouragement from your post.

    Cut loose

Congratulations on the five year mark! That is huge! It's the one we are all looking forward to. That's got be a great feeling knowing that you're about to be "cut loose". Hmmmm.....the song Footloose comes to mind here. Do the happy dance (but don't hurt yourself!). I hope you celebrate in a big way!

    congrats!

5 years is the big one for sure. Glad you are "free at last". Nobody likes that having thoughts of that friggin thing lingering around in the shadows. You never forget but hopefully no longer anything to fear.

    Mick,

    Mick,

My cancer was very close to my vocal cords so your story is very encouraging!!!  So happy for you and my dream is one day I can be where you are.  Congratulations :)
