in Head and Neck Cancer #1

Finished my chemo and radiation on Sept 29th.  90 day PET scan showed NED of the supraglottal SCC but the left lymph node lit up the scan at 2.1cm.  Greatly reduced from original 5+cm and team still not certain of character of nodes.  Dr gave me option of having lymph nodes left surgically removed or just wait and see what happens.  I agreed to the surgery and set date for last week of January but wanted still to stop by here and solicit opinion from my trusted advisors.

    Glad that the PET

    for the supra glottal showed NED! My two cents is to finish the race with surgery. There are many here on the site who have undergone neck dissections to remove lymph nodes...as before you will continue to good support and advice from those who have walked that walk. Best of luck to you and keep us posted. You have my well wishes and prayers!

    Surgery

    Surgery is the way to go.  I had a neck dissection to remove some lymph nodes back a year ago.  It's a bit uncomfortable for a few days, but it wasn't as bad as my tonsilectomy.  Once my drainage tube was removed and I got my staples out all was good.  I do have some numbness still around the incision site and my earlobe.  They will most likely hit some nerves in there, but hopefully all the feeling will return for you.

    My husband had a neck

    My husband had a neck dissection in early November. The recovery was not bad for him. I think you are making a wise choice. Best of luck to you!

    Get it over and out

    The best way to make sure it is gone is to take it out, I believe you are going the right way, plus you will not be sitting down thinking about it all the time. It is a hard discussion sometimes but just believe whatever choice you make is the right one for you.

    I was Supraglottic T3 N0 M0

    They did a neck dissection as a precaution on both sides, 48 on the left and 38 on the right and all were clear. Mokus this should get it all so you no longer will worry and just recover and get well my friend. Thank you for letting us know, I do appreciate it. You are still in my thoughts and prayers...always!

    Silent One, it's good to hear that things are heading in the right direction for you. I was told not to be surprised if there was some activity in the lymph nodes at the time of the first PET scan because it can sometimes take a little longer for the cancer cells to die out. In that case, another scan would be done in three months. If you are still debating whether to have surgery, I would discuss the pros and cons of waiting for another scan. Ultimately, your doctors have the experience to make the decision and I would take their advice.
