Hello,

We have a newcomer to our board, Maggie. She's got her surgeon appointment tomorrow and she's, understandably, afraid and nervous. So let's go with her!!

It's short notice so I'll go ahead and drive even though my bus permit has expired.

xoxo

ahhhhhhh you gals are THE BEST.  Hahah I have never seen anything like this.....my very own pink bus ride.  Dang i think I forgot to mention that I live all the way up in snowy Canada so you will need coats and mitts and don't forget your toques . Surgeon at 9:15....I find surgeons generally whip through their appointments pretty quickly so I have to remember go slllllooowly  .  Could the bowel and the breast be related or is this fresh cancer? What do we do now.....I can hardly type my hands are shaking so badly.

Thanks for the fine welcome.....lovin you already......mags

    I'll bring the snow shovel

I'm from North Dakota and know that if you travel in the winter you need to have your snow shovel and bag of sand along in case we get stuck - wouldn't want you to be late for your appt.

Be sure and ask surgeon if you can tape your appointments, like with your phone or an iPod. All my docs said that was OK. It really helps to be able to go back and listen again to hear what you missed the first time. It was 3 months between my first radiology appt and rads (chemo got stuck in between unexpectedly) and I was so glad I could review that first session. Also, have your questions written down, starting with most important and going down to least.

    well

the surgeon says the area in question is very small...perhaps one centimetre.  He offered a lumpectomy followed by radiation or mastectomy of the one breast which is what i have elected to chose.  Considering my history of heavy duty surgeries.....(one liver resction was 7 hours) he felt it best to do the mastectomy take the sentinel node and some other nodes and get going from there.  Possible rads possible chemo but hopefully clean margins.  Not sure I understand all that but that is what I remember.

did not get a surgery date but there is a chance he could get me in before Christmas.......that would be wonderful.....less time to stew and worry. I assume I will be staged after the surgery...He feels the bowel and the breast are very likely NOT related....two separate things....

so that's it.......try to breath and wait for the phone to ring......

thanks to all for your warm welcome........mags

    Hi Mags:

Jumping in from the colon cancer board to wish my dear, dear dear, did I say dear and sweet friend, my love and support as she enters this new cancer journey.  Remember Mags what we say on the colon board, this is not a sprint, and  if you feel the need to take a day or two to review your options and be firm in your decision than do that.

I told you the gals on this board will be welcoming, encouraging, informative and supportive.  Just like the colon board, no question is too small to ask.

    Love and Hugs - Tina

    thanks for the update

Thanks for the update, good to hear the tumor is small, and hope nodes and margins are clean which will decrease your chances of needing chemo. My tumor was 1 cm and we weren't anticipating chemo, but then my oncotype score came back too high, indicating it was a more aggressive type of cancer, so I ended up needing the chemo after all.

For now, prepare for the surgery - stay active, stay away from sick people, prioritize what you really need to get done before the surgery. Your arm motion will be limited after surgery - no reaching into the cupboard for dishes (move things down to counter level). I've been told it's helpful to have a big soft pillow to support under that arm after surgery, and that sleeping in a recliner works better than in a bed for awhile.

If you have a freezer, prepare and freeze some meals ahead of time. I had a lumpectomy - I'm sure those ladies who had mastectomies will have lots of suggestions for you.

    I'm with Tina.....

    Welcome!

And thank you for the update, dear one!  I have your package ready to mail today.

What with the 'excitement' in our 'little' town Wednesday (I live in Redlands, CA...the place of the mass shooting), I did not attempt to venture out until today.

Know that you will be (and are) loved here, as with the colon board.....Ask us anything...we have been there/done that with most!

    Welcome aboard the pink bus!

    Hugs, Kathi
