Owweeeee it hurts to pee---radiation side effext

Hi folks,

just wondering if anyone has experienced this and maybe has some remedy. I have had 16 radiation treatments for rectal cancer, and just a few days ago the burning while urinating started to get a little worse. It probably starrted around the 12th treatment, and the docs know about it. They did test my urine, as I have an issue with kidney stones and a benign kidney disease (sponge kidney) that are currently not an issue. So, I'm sure it is not a uti. It just burns at starting to pee, and at first it was just the first morning urine.  there is no urgency or other symptoms. It is like peeing glass though (glad to be a lady!)

i am also on oral chemo drug Xeloda at a dose of 1500mg taken once in morning, then 12 hours later. I don't think that is the culprit, but include it for your expertise.

I took one Azo pill, but will take only that one as not sure it is ok to do.  But, I am pretty uncomfortable.  I read some stuff online, and it seems that this is a side effect to radiation. All it advised was to drink more water.  That makes sense, so I am doing that!

Any other thoughts.  There has to be an herbal tea or something out there!

much appreciated!

Lord, I'm trying!!!

thanks,

Sharon

    One of the few

    side effects I DIDN'T get.

It cold also be a common, everyday UTI.  I got those, and drank Cranberry juice until it was coming out of my ears (figure of speech). It worked for me.

But as we like to say here, if in doubt, call your Radiation Ocologist and talk to one of the nurses or the Onc. Everyone is different.

    Ouch!

    Just a couple of suggestions:

You may want to ask your doc for Phenazopyridine.  It mixes with your urine and acts as an analgesic to releive pain during urination.  Turns your urine orange - but can be worth it.

You might also try picking up an inexpensive plastic sitz bath from your local pharmacy.  Fill it with warm water and urinate while sitting in it.  That can help too - and no prescription is needed.

As stated - drink a lot of water - which can help to reduce the irritant in the urine that is causing the burning.

I hope you find relief soon!

    hey folks,

may try the sitz bath. Have the Azo, but need to make sure it is ok during treatment.

thanks again everyone for the super quick responses.  Also, will get the cranberry juice going!

I am a 6 year anal cancer survivor who had 30 radiation zaps to the anal and pelvic area.  I was given a balm used for lactating cows by my radioligist.  That was soothing.  I also used the pain pill perscribed.  I took a bath everyday before the radiation zap.  i used a water squirt bottle while urinating as well.  If you go to the anal cancer board there are many remedies for the very burned area.  I wish you well.  Lori

    Lemon Juice

As crazy as it sounds drink a couple glasses of water a day with lemon juice squeezed in it. It will stop the burning quickly. Keep drinking the lemon water daily until a week or two after radiation treatment.  If you drink it daily you will not have the burning. You can use fresh squeezed lemonade too. Chik-Fil-a used to serve it. It works without out adding more drugs in your system.
