Hi all,

My mom started treatment yesterday, an all day affair! First was her radiation, then upstairs for chemo. She had he blood work done and her hempgloben was 22! I guess 38 is normal? They considered a tranfusuion but her dr feels she is healthy and stable enough to try iron first, the will retest next week. They then injected the mytomicen (purple poison)? Then hooked up her pump for 96 hrs. She said feels ok so far very tired but ok. Just wanted to filll you guys in thanks for all the support so far  just happy we have started this journey and one day closer to having this out of our lives!!

Day one of treatment was so scary for me, not knowing what to expect.  It sounds like your mom got through it okay and I'm happy to hear that.  Tiredness/fatigue is normal and the best thing she can do is rest, rest, rest!  I wish her all the best with day 2 and beyond.

As Martha said....rest, rest, rest!  I remember day one of my whole journey being one of both anxiety and a sort of happy excitedness to be actually taking action in this fight.  I was anxious over how the chemo/radiation would affect me physically and limit my daily activities but also emotionally excited to still feel like I had some sense of control over this thing!  Sounds like your mom is in a good emotional state to get through this.  Keep us posted as she moves forward.

    fluids

Make sure your Mom drinks lots of fluids.  Have her carry a BPA-free container with her to sip water.  Also, she will experience taste changes so providing easy access to foods she can tolerate will help keep her weight.

I am glad your mom started tx and is on the way to recovery.  I know I was glad to get started.  When I was there there was a very young teenager probably 17 or 18 and then an older man probably in his 70s.  I thought if they can do it so can I.  I felt the most for the teenager and just prayed he would come out healthy again.  Keep us updated. So glad to hear your mom is holding up, but remember there is always calm before the storm so as the others said make sure she stays hydrated, gets plenty of rest and has good nutrition. Smoothies and frozen yogurt were my go tos when I didn't want to eat. My doctors had me use Biotine toothpaste and Biotine mouthwash, you may see about that as well. Hope she keeps feeling well.

    Biotene

I, too, was advised to use the Biotene products too.  They do not contain alcohol, causing less irritation.
